Leaving Planet Earth Page 7

by Lewis Hetherington

The music builds and finishes as the lights all snap to be tightly focused on VELA, addressing the crowd from the top of the Arena.

Her face is projected on the walls surrounding the audience.

  Silence.

  VELA: People of New Earth.

This world is yours, it was waiting for you. We were guided here by the Gatekeeper. He took you by the hand and showed you there was no monster under the bed.

And therefore. We must commit to Final Closure.

Many years ago Old Earthers looked up into the sky and imagined the possibilities. It was they who lay the foundations for our leap into the unknown. As we cut the umbilical cord that ties us to them we must hold those people in our hearts. We must feel their power and their pride. They gave birth to us and now we must let them go.

From this moment forward we are to sever our communications, our ties with our nesting ground. Not because we do not care. But because we must be unafraid to leap forward. We owe that to the generations before and after us. People of New Earth. Take inspiration from the imagination of our ancestors. We must be ready to sacrifice in order to grow.

If you have any doubt, this is the time to discover it, and cut it out, scalpel-like. Get rid of it, expel it into the black sky, bury it under the ground, cast it into the churning sea. We must survive.

We find this planet within us and take its blood in our veins. You have everything you want. You are everything you want. We are rich, and we shall grow.

We shall spread out across this planet and then we will keep looking. Take the quicksilver blood of the stars and let it course through our veins to take us further and further and further.

This universe is expanding and we can fill it. We can go to the edges and push it harder. A child sees a tree, and climbs it. You see a mountain and you scale it. You look at the seas and you cross them. You look to the stars and sail through them. We can see the edges of the universe, and we will reach beyond them.

  This is just the beginning.

Sounds of explosions. White noise. Fragments of people's voices. The sounds of Old Earth imploding.

  Blackout. Silence.

  The End.
