In the Spider's House Page 40

by Sarah Diamond

There seemed nothing else to say. I watched Eleanor board the train with an intense and unplaceable sense of guilt. On an impulse, I spoke as Rebecca stepped up herself, pulling the door to.

‘I’m sorry,’ I said. ‘I didn’t mean to drive you away.’

‘You didn’t.’ She spoke leaning out of the open train-door window. ‘It’s not your fault. We just have to leave now. That’s all there is to it.’

The train began to pull out. I waved. She waved back, solemn-faced. Standing in the silence, I watched the train reach the edge of the world, and disappear.

Then I turned, and began the long walk back to Ploughman’s Lane.
