Tank rubbed the stubble along his jawline, thinking. “There were a lot of shots fired last night. My men disposed of the bodies to keep the heat off of us, but I’m sure the cops were called. I would think someone has already covered the story.”
“But,” she said with a smile, “not from the perspective of someone who was actually kidnapped by Demon himself. I had an inside point-of-view on everything that was happening at that warehouse, and you’d be surprised at what people will tell you when they think they’re going to kill you in a few hours.” Her time with the Red Devils had been horrifying, but she had used it to her best advantage. Even when her life was on a string, she was still a reporter at heart.
“Are you telling me that you were interviewing them even while they tortured you?” Tank set his fork down with clatter, his face a mixture of shock and adoration.
Piper shrugged. “I couldn’t be certain what would happen. This story might involve just a little bit of fibbing, and maybe a few errands that would best be run by your men, but I think I can pull it off.” She looked at him hopefully. Tank had said she was free to go, but she still needed his help to really get this story off the ground.
The biker shook his head and sighed. “Anything you need.”
Several hours later, Tank paced the floor in front of her as her fingers flew across the keyboard. Thanks to one of the Chrome Kings who had been willing to go back to the Devils’ warehouse and take a few pictures for her, they had everything they needed. Piper’s chest was filling with hope as she clattered away on the computer, knowing that this story was turning into just what she needed.
“I’m still not sure how you’re going to keep us out of it,” Tank said when she read him her most recent paragraph. “Won’t someone guess that the Devils were dealing with us?”
“Not at all,” she assured him. “It turns out they had similar deals with other gangs and clubs, and even a few individuals. That logbook Chain picked up last night had everything documented in it, so I’ll give it to the police as soon as I’ve taken pictures of all the pages to go with the story.”
“And you don’t think they’ll dig further into things?”
Piper smiled. “Probably not. You’d be surprised how much news reports influence the police in this town. They don’t mind letting reporters do the works for them sometimes. I have no doubt they’ll be happy to arrest any of the Red Devils who still remain at large, though. It’ll make them look like they were involved all along.”
An hour later, she and Tank went to her apartment so she could change clothes and pack up a few of her things. She wasn’t going in to work today, but she let him escort her to her work just long enough to hand in her story.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Mick demanded when she strolled into his office unannounced. “You disappear, give me some excuse about a sick aunt, and then you’re a no-call, no-show again this morning? You’re fired, Piper!”
She had feared this moment in the past, but now it was only amusing to her. “Go ahead and fire me if you want, but then a different paper will get the chance to print this.” Piper slapped a paper copy of her article down on his desk.
Mick only took a moment to read the first few lines. Then he snatched up the paper, his eyes widening. “Is this true?” he asked in awe. “Is this really where you were yesterday?”
“It sure is.”
He read a few more lines before gesturing impatiently at her. “Close the door. We’ve got things to discuss.”
Epilogue
Piper
A few weeks later, Piper breezed in the door after work. She was getting used to living in the big house instead of her apartment, although it was one of the smallest things that had changed in her life. She smiled, knowing that she had so much to tell Tank.
The biker came up out of the basement to see her, dust and dirt all over his clothes. “You’re home early. How did things go today?”
“Wonderful!” she enthused. “I can’t even begin to tell you how much better it is at the Daily Bugle. The editor-in-chief actually gives me good assignments, that is, on the days when she doesn’t tell me I can just do what I want. I’m finally living my dream!” As soon as her story had been printed on the first page of the Morning Star, she had received so many calls and emails that she couldn’t keep up. Some of them were from news and radio stations who wanted to interview her, but quite a few of them were job offers as well. As much as she missed working with Alexa, she knew she had finally taken her career to the next level.
“I’m glad to hear it.”
“What are you doing down there?” she asked, looking at the grime on his clothes and hands.
Tank stepped into the bathroom to wash his hands. “Tearing a few things down. I’m going to completely redo the basement, and I’m getting rid of that closet. I want everything to be fresh and new for us.”
She leaned in to give him a kiss, not caring if she got her clothes dirty. She just wanted to get her hands on him. “That’s very sweet of you, and a very nice surprise.”
Tank put his arms around her and pulled her close, lifting her feet off the ground. He kissed her back thoroughly as he carried her down the hall to the living room, his lips lingering when they finally broke apart. “That’s not the only surprise I have for you.”
Her lips twisted into a smile. “It just so happens that I have a surprise for you as well.” It had been difficult to concentrate on her work once she found out. And she would probably need to work from home more often, but she knew she could pull it off. After what she had been through, she knew she could do anything.
He ran a hand through his dark hair. “Well, mine’s pretty darn good. So how about you go first?”
“If you insist.” There were so many ways she could have told him the news, but Piper knew that Tank was a simple and direct man. She reached in her purse and pulled out a positive pregnancy test. “I’m going to have your baby.”
The mischievous smile that had been on his face disappeared as his jaw dropped open. He grabbed the test out of her hand, staring at it as though it might not be real. “Are you serious?”
It was amusing to see him so taken aback, and she couldn’t help but laugh as she nodded. “Very much so. Believe me, I did more than one of those, just to make sure.”
He scooped her up and kissed her again, spinning her in a circle. “That’s amazing! And it’s so much better than my surprise.”
“Which is?”
Tank set her down, still looking flabbergasted. “I had a big thing all planned out, and I was going to tell you how much I love you and ask you to marry me.”
Her day could not have gotten any better. Piper sank into his arms, looking up into those wonderful dark eyes of his. “I accept.”
He pulled her close. “I really do love you,” he said quietly.
She had already known, even though they hadn’t said it. There was so much between them, and they didn’t need to discuss it to know it was true. But she still loved hearing it. “I know. I love you, too.”
