“Yeah, and Novak and Antonio didn’t kill each other and start a war,” Aurora laughed.

That got a laugh from everyone as usual. Aurora’s ability to take the tension from a roomful of gangsters was a welcome addition—if not a needed one to keep them from killing each other.

Glazov got serious again. “There will be more jobs. We do have a bright future. We will remain at peace. We will continue to be as my wife said: Distinguished gentlemen; men and women of honor who stand together in peace. That peace will ensure we all continue to make money and run the city of Louisville, Kentucky. We will be richer. The city will be better. And the community will thrive because of that.”

Glazov raised his shot glass in the air, and the people in the room followed suit raising the shot glasses of vodka that had been placed in front of them by a women who had woven in and out of the room as if she wasn’t one of Antonio’s dancers but part of the atmosphere.

“To the peace treaty remaining secure,” Glazov toasted.

“To the peace treaty,” the attendees agreed. They tossed their shots of vodka back, secure in the fact they were unified.

  Epilogue

China, knives, and forks clattered like background music to conversation. The Glazov family were all seated in the posh dining room of the Pakhan’s home. Food was part of the Russian culture, as was vodka, and family.

Glazov sat at the head of the table and looked around at his family. Though he’d dreamed of walking streets of gold as a child, he had yearned with an aching void to one day have a family. His dream of that had not only come true, but it had lasted through the decades and winds of change father time was known for.

Family was the foundation that kept not only his worldly kingdom secure, but it kept his soul secure too. A broken man could accomplish nothing. These were the people who made sure he didn’t go off the deep end of violence. These were the people who kept him grounded.

He wasn’t about to break down and cry like a little bitch, but damn, he sure did love them.
