“Tina,” Phoebe said, as tears ran down her cheeks. “Can you hear me Tee,” she repeated. Valentina moaned. Phoebe rubbed the side of her face. “Is she going to be okay,” she asked Iris. The woman looked at her. Her face grim and the look wasn’t one of hope. “Its hard to say. The baby will start lashing out. It is an alpha male. He had small claws. He could cut her bad. She needs to push. But she won’t. She is weak. I need he to push.
Phoebe looked back at Valentina. She kissed her then held her face. “Tee. You have to push. He won’t magically come out. You have to push him out. Come on. You can do it. You have to. Or you’ll die. And I won’t let you. You can’t leave me. I need you. My baby is in intensive care. I had him on the floor. He cut me up bad. I almost bled out. Legend found me but he thought I was dead. So see, if I can make it you can. I can’t do this alone,” she pleaded.
Valentina turned her head and opened her eyes. She blinked several times, trying to adjust her sight. “Phee,” she said. Valentina burst into tears at the sight of Phoebe. Phoebe got closer and held Valentina. “Okay. Now when I say go, you push,” she said, as she held onto to Valentina. Iris lit up. She could see Valentina was becoming more alert. More alive.
“Okay Tee. Get ready. One, two, three, push,” she said. Valentina pushed then let out a sharp exhale. Iris continued to rub her while Phoebe continued to coach her. Phoebe repeated her countdown as Valentina pushed. Soon Valentina was pushing before the countdown. Phoebe sat up. Valentina opened her legs and began to push with all her strength. Phoebe waited. She could see the head. “He’s coming Tee. That’s it,” she urged, as she glanced at Iris. The women were overwhelmed.
Soon the head popped out. “Oh! His head is out Tee,” Phoebe announced. Valentina looked down and smiled. She looked at Phoebe and burst into tears again. “Oh, don’t cry. Everything is fine. Now come on. Push him out,” she said.
Valentina took a deep breath and bearing down, pushed the baby completely out. Phoebe picked him up and immediately handed him to Iris. “Okay. No mistaking that’s a boy,” Phoebe joked. Valentina chuckled. She couldn’t take her eyes off Phoebe, as if she would vanish. Phoebe wiped her sister’s tears. “What? It’s over. He’s fine. And you’re fine,” she said. “What about you?” Valentina asked, her voice low and weak. “Who me... I’m Great! I have my family back. I’m great,” she said, as she raised Valentina’s hand and kissed it.
Iris grabbed a wet towel and wiped the newborn and then swaddled him and handed him back to Phoebe. She packed a cloth of oils and herbs up into Valentina’s vagina to help the wounds heal quickly.
“Here’s your son. Look at him. He’s beautiful,” she said, as she sat on the side of the bed. Valentina held him in one hand and held her other hand open. Phoebe held her hand, caressing it as she gave her words on praise.
“You did it. I knew you could. You’re like… My hero. You know that right,” she said. Valentina nodded. “I love you Phee,” she said. “I love you to. I think I should get your husband now. I’m sure he wants to see his son.”
“Stop running before you fall,” Valentina shouted to her rambunctious toddler. Legend and Reed walked ahead of her and Phoebe. “How much you want to bet they are talking about us,” Phoebe said. Valentina burst into laughter. “You know they can hear you right,” she said. “Oh shit. Can they,” Phoebe replied. “I have a lot to teach you,” she replied. Phoebe laughed then looked around taking in the sun and wind.
“So when can you turn?” Valentina asked. “Um. In another year. I think. Its every blue moon, which is about two and a half years,” Phoebe replied. “Oh good. Then we can have some real fun,” Valentina said. The women continued walking. They talked about the village. How they loved everyone. Even the women who still lusted after their husbands. Reed glanced back then ran to catch up with his son who was getting a little too far ahead of him.
Phoebe looked around. Cedar Falls was a mini paradise. Her life had come full circle. She couldn’t ask for a better life. The land was beautiful. The air was clean. Her husband was the leader and the people treated her like royalty. And to her great surprise, Reed was suddenly a sexual dynamo. Something she discovered after he saved her.
She was dying when he walked into her hospital room and bit her on the shoulder, after doctors told him her organs were shutting down. The only thing to do to save her, was turn her into a werewolf. A wolf didn’t suffer such a fate. She would gain inner strength. She would survive.
He demanded they not give her any more blood and so the hospital followed his wishes. The baby she never knew she was carrying, had obliterated her insides. The baby that they kept in intensive care because of his low heart beat and inability to open his eyes.
Reed took him. Causing a nationwide manhunt. They were looking for a man named Griffith Stonewell. A search that mysteriously came to an abrupt end. The baby was reported as being transferred to a nondisclosed location, after he claimed bruises on his child, prompted him to sneak the child out of the facility and place him elsewhere. A call that was confirmed by the mayor of Anchorage. Phoebe never questioned his reasoning. She would turn into a rock if it meant being by his side. She was anxiously waiting the day she could turn and run alongside her husband. It all seemed exciting. She was lucky to be alive. She felt she had been given a second chance. And she wasn’t looking back.
“So, what should we eat for dinner?” Valentina asked, as she watched Legend pick up their son and toss him in the air, to her son’s delight. “Well, Reed wants fresh bison. The men are hunting tonight. So, I guess it’s bison. Rare of course,” she replied. “Sounds good sis.”
