End of Ajax, Louisiana Heat ....
“I visited the prison once a week though,” Joel admitted.
Her brows furrowed. “What?”
Her grandfather nodded. “I had a friend there.”
She shook her head. “You don’t have any lady friends.”
“I do now, and have for almost 2 years.”
Wynette stilled.
“I visited Karly,” he admitted.
Her eyes rounded. “What? Why?”
“Because I found out she was in there on some trumped up charge too. Not murder, but—”
“I know what happened to her. She was my cellmate for the last 2 years. That is not what I mean!” Wynette’s voice rose.
Joel stared back at her. “I needed eyes on you, Baby Girl. I needed information.”
Wynette shook her head. “And...?”
“She told me about what you were going through.”
Gasping, Wynette’s hands began to shake and she dropped her fork.
Ajax looked back and forth between them. “So, you know the name of this fucker that put those stripes on her back?”
Wynette gasped and looked over at him.
Ajax did not back down. “Oh, yeah. The man will not get away with what he did to you, Wynette. You are not alone in the world anymore.”
Joel’s head snapped up and he stared at him.
Ajax stared back. “That’s right old man. She is under my wing. No one will ever fucking hurt her again.”
Joel looked more than happy, as a tear rolled down his cheek. “I worried. I mean I’m an old man and I won’t last forever.”
Wynette had tears in her eyes as she reached for both of his hands across the table. “Don’t talk like that, Papaw.”
“I have to.” He shrugged. “I hoped that someday, you would have a good man behind you.”
“Well, not so sure about the good part.” Ajax grinned. “But she has me, and that means she has the whole MC.”
Joel nodded and he looked grateful. “So, back to Karly. She called me two days ago and she sounded so scared. She was crying and saying she was being watched.”
Wynette gasped. “Watched? She wasn’t supposed to get out until next week.”
Joel nodded. “They let her out early, right after they let you out I guess and that wasn’t good news like you’d think. She thinks they’re following her to find you and she’s afraid they’ll grab her right off the streets.”
Ajax leaned in. “I’m lost here. What did this woman say?”
A commotion sounded from the front doors.
They all turned to look.
Fireball, the VP for the MC, came in carrying a woman who was bloodied almost from head to toe. “Nuero!” he called out for the doc. “You gotta help her. I think she’s dying!”
Nuero rushed over and told him to lay her on the table.
Wynette, Ajax, and Joel went over to the table.
Wynette gasped when she recognized her. “It’s Karly!”
The girl lying on the table opened her eyes and saw her. “W-Wynette—they are coming to—kill you...”
Chapter One
Karly groaned and curled into a ball when Nuero began examining her.
He growled as he realized she needed more than the table could offer him. He looked over at Fireball. “Bring her back to the Infirmary. I need more room and less people around.”
Fireball gathered her in his arms and carefully carried her down the hall. He laid her down on one of the bed.
“Sweetheart, I’m sorry but I have to know how bad they beat you,” Neuro told her.
“It just hurts,” she whimpered.
“I know honey.” He shook his head as more of her bruises were exposed as he lifted her shirt off her body. “But I need to assess the damage.”
Fireball stood back and bumped into his president.
Turning his head, Ajax glared at him. “Who would do this to any woman?” he growled low then turned to look at Wynette. “Do you know? Give me a fucking name.”
Wynette stared at him for a moment. Instead of answering him, she pushed her way around them. Going over to the bed, she sat down and reached for her friend’s hand.
Karly opened her eyes and tears ran down her face as she stared at Wynette. “I’m so sorry. So sorry,” she babbled.
Wynette reached up and brushed a strand of her friend’s hair from her face. “What are you sorry about?”
“I had to tell them what I knew,” Karly admitted. “I had to. Carlson told me if I didn’t, they would kill me.”
Wynette frowned. “What truth? What did you tell them? I don’t understand?”
Karly sobbed for a moment then spoke, “You talk in your sleep, did you know that? Usually, only when you get upset but I would listen to the times when your nightmare got the better of you. Sometimes, I didn’t want to hear it and I would wake you up but then Carlson would do something stupid and get you riled up on purpose then he told me to listen to your words and report back to him.” She glared at Wynette and spat, “That bastard wouldn’t give up, and I had to tell him what you said in your sleep.”
Wynette shook her head slowly. “What did I say in my sleep?”
Karly closed her eyes and sobbed. “I didn’t have a choice.”
“What did I say?” Wynette asked again urgently.
“I couldn’t hear everything, but you did talk about the killing. You named a name but I didn’t hear it clearly. I had to tell them that. They know you know who actually killed someone called Mad Dog.”
Wynette sat back in her chair. “What? But I never saw his face.”
Karly nodded and whispered so only Wynette could hear her, “Yes you did. You saw his face. You talked about his scar. You did see his face.” She groaned as Nuero poked and prodded her body. “I told them you saw his face but I didn’t tell them about the scar. I was too afraid to tell them that.” She pulled back her hand and curled up in a ball. “I betrayed your secret and I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. You were a friend to me when I needed one and then I betrayed you like that!”
Wynette leaned forward again and took her friend’s hand in hers. “Don’t you say that ever again. You did what you had to do.” She smiled gently at her.
Karly shook her head. “You don’t understand. I was only in prison to keep an eye on you. Carlson and his friends were holding my little brother hostage then they made a deal with me. If I went in and watched over you, they would protect him. They promised me he would be safe.” She shook her head. “They lied to me then and they kept me in that place as long as you were inside.”
“What are you saying?” Wynette frowned as she glanced at Ajax and Fireball. She then turned her concerned gaze back to her friend.
Karly looked defeated.
“I should have told you this a year ago but I was too afraid of Carlson. My little brother John was an addict. He was addicted to a new designer drug called Ebony Resign. They gave him too much a year ago and he od’ed,” she wept out. “They didn’t even try to help him. They watched him die and never called an ambulance or a doctor that might have saved his life. He was just a kid who needed help. That was when Carlson got out of control. He began pushing me harder and harder and I got scared I would never get out of that place alive.”
Wynette got tears in her eyes and held her hand.
“Then after you were released, he came and got me. He told me I was free and if I did what they wanted, I could stay that way. Everywhere I went, I could feel them, they watched every move I made. Then night before last, Carlson broke into my apartment and dragged me out. He took me to a warehouse and he began questioning me. That place was scary. I could see other people there but they were in the shadows and I couldn’t see them. No one but Carlson said anything. I think he was trying to get me to say something I hadn’t told him before. But I couldn’t. I’d already told him everything I knew. He just kept hitting me and hitting me. I must have passed out because the next thing I knew he was tossing me out of a truck that barely slowed down. I hit the ground hard and then I rolled into a ditch. I didn’t know anything until he found me.” She looked over at Fireball. “But before I passed out at the warehouse, I did hear one of the men in the shadows say, we’ll just have to stop her ourselves.”
“Was there anything unusual about his voice?” Fireball wanted to know.
“He sounded like an old man now that you mention it. Just before I passed out, I saw him walk away. He was leaning on an ebony cane.” She was crying again. “I’m sorry.”
Wynette shook her head. “Don’t be sorry, just be thankful you survived. I know I am.” Then she sighed. “I knew walking into that prison I might not walk out again and I had to wonder what the hell did I do wrong? Then I realized I didn’t do anything wrong except be in the wrong place at the wrong time. When Sheriff Munroe found me, I think he was looking for something he could use to blackmail the Zetran family. Instead, he found me trying to help. He railroaded me into prison and has been using that fact to get what he could from the situation.”
“You think Munroe is blackmailing the Zetran’s?” Ajax asked.
“I think that man is in this up to his fat jowls,” Wynette replied. “Just ask my Papaw what kind of man Jackson Munroe is.”
