by M. J. Schiller

“—but if you can’t reach Lieutenant McGowan or Cozwell for some reason, feel free to call me. We will keep a uniformed policeman posted until such time as Lieutenant McGowan tells you otherwise.”

Heath nodded and all of the men shook hands. He wondered if he should say anything else to Jasmine Barrett, but decided that in her state, she probably wouldn’t hear him anyway. The Chief wanted to give the crime scene people some final instructions, so he and Adam walked out on their own. They were halfway down the hall when he heard the door open behind him and the sound of someone running in his direction. He turned to see Jasmine Barrett rushing towards him. She put a hand on his arm.

“You’ll find him, won’t you?” she asked frantically, grasping at the top of her robe to hold it together. “You’ll find whoever did this to Tricia?” She gazed up at him with such stark desperation in her eyes he was speechless for a second.

Her uncle rushed out the door after her. “Jasmine!”

As Heath peered down into her eyes without speaking, he felt an unfamiliar tug on his heart.

“Jasmine! I’m sorry, detective.” Brody grabbed her by the shoulders. “You need to leave the man alone,” he sniped, but then, seeming to notice the look of disapproval, bordering on anger, in Heath’s eyes, he changed his tone. “Come on, darling, now. Let’s go back inside.” He shuffled her toward the door. At the threshold she peeked back at Heath one more time before disappearing into her condo.

  Note from author

Thank you for reading THE HEART TEACHES BEST, part of my REAL ROMANCE COLLECTION. I hope you enjoyed it! Now that you’ve read the book, won’t you please consider writing a review? Reviews are one of the best ways readers discover great new books. They don’t need to be fancy or long, just a sentence or two honestly describing your opinion of/experience with the book. I would sincerely appreciate it.

  About the author

MJ is a lunch lady in the heart of Central Illinois. My gosh, can you get more folksy than that? She met her husband at the University of Missouri-Columbia and now she has an eighteen-year-old (how did that happen?) and sixteen year old triplets! She loves to read, karaoke (where she can pretend she is a rock star) and spends WAY too much time on Facebook. She grew up in St. Louis and still has family there.
