Shorty nodded his head to the beat and Marcus looked so still, he seemed asleep. The ride was void of words, and Lamont liked it. It wasn’t often the two juggernauts were quiet.
Climbing from the ride, the trio walked toward the restaurant, dressed to turn heads. Lamont wore a sharkskin grey suit with a charcoal shirt, brown tie, and black shoes. Shorty and Marcus had ditched the suit jackets, wearing white shirts, black trousers, and shoes. People stared at the trio as they sauntered by like movie stars.
Inside, they were shown to a private room. K-Bar, Xiyu and several other faces waited, dressed in their finery and drinking champagne. They rose when the three entered.
The seat at the head of the table had been left for Lamont and he stood next to the chair with the regal arrogance of royalty. Reaching for a glass, he took a small sip, wetting his throat.
‘Years ago, we banded together to try something new. The streets are no joke, and it all intensifies when the task is to build something real,’ Lamont paused, looking into the eyes of every man present. ‘We’re stronger than we’ve ever been thanks to the efforts of everyone in this room, and all our people out of it. That’s why I wanted you all here. To thank you for staying loyal, even when things grew difficult lately.
‘As long as we keep going, the money will keep flowing. Let’s continue to show everyone who the dominant team is,’ Lamont saw the pride etched on all the faces of the men. ‘Let’s eat some of this good food, smoke some cigars, and go get drunk!’
As each man held their glasses aloft, Lamont prepared himself for the future.
