“Look at the size of him. Does he look starved to you?”
“But he always seemed so sad.”
“That’s cats for you, Pemberley. They’re manipulative creatures.”
“Oh dear, poor cat.” Pemberley gazed down at Zeppelin. “I really had no idea.”
“Why poor cat? He’s had extra meals for several weeks now. Several months, even. I don’t know how we’re going to explain this little mix-up to Mr Greenstone.” Churchill rubbed her brow.
“Would it be all right if I gave Zeppelin his kippers now, do you think? He’s so used to having kippers at this time and look at his little face. He’s all hopeful.”
“Go on, then,” said Churchill, “but this has to stop. Perhaps you could get a cat of your own.”
“Oh, I don’t know about that; it would be too much responsibility. I much prefer feeding other people’s. Would you like a cup of something while Tilly – sorry, Zeppelin – has a bite to eat?”
“Why not, Pembers? Thank you.”
“So another case is solved, Mrs Churchill!”
“Indeed it is. I wonder what Compton Poppleford will throw at us next.”
