Chapter Twenty
Cartazonon stepped out of his jet and smiled. He'd always loved the fog; it was so easy to hide in. His sleek black 1969 Mustang waited for him. Even after all these years, horses were his favorite. Sliding onto the black leather seat, he started the engine and let her warm up while he cast out his energy and found a small pocket of Akashic energy.
Cartazonon wasn't sure if he felt the source of the power spike he'd noticed before Christmas, but what he felt was the only thing within fifty miles that seemed big enough to be worth his time. As he drove towards the energy, his phone rang.
"Yes."
"I was successful, Khan," Lee said.
"Excellent, I'm in San Francisco right now," said Cartazonon.
"We'll arrive soon. Your newest assistant is very efficient."
He laughed. "I agree. I haven't thought of bringing anyone over in two hundred years, but she might be a keeper."
Lee sighed, and Cartazonon couldn't help but grin. Lee was the first general Cartazonon ever made his, and Lee got moody every time he'd brought another into their fold. Like a child disliking the newborn baby in the family. Of course he'd never tell Lee that. The last time they'd fought, Lee almost cut Cartazonon’s arm off.
"I'm glad you found something. If I don't replenish soon, the protections might start to falter. The last time that happened several valuable plans were stolen and someone tried to embezzle money. Whatever happened to him?"
"I believe the Gorgons played with him for a few months before getting bored, and then the troll made a stew," Lee explained.
"Oh, good. I'm glad he didn't go to waste. I have to focus now; I'll talk to you later."
"Of course, Khan. I'll get the mermaid ready as soon as we get to the office."
Cartazonon turned off the phone and split his attention between the insane San Francisco traffic and the call of power.
Chapter Twenty-One
"There are times when fear is good. It must keep its watchful place at the heart's controls."
