I shook my head. “No. Ella. I’m Dorothy’s great granddaughter. Nox is a lion shifter too, he’s helping me…” Realization dawned. He was here to substantiate Sayer’s claims. He’d brought me with him to see for myself, one way or the other, where Sayer’s loyalties truly lay. “He was sent here to find you…”
A cheer rang out from somewhere behind—a loud, echoing sound that suggested it had come from inside.
“Sounds like you’re missing something,” I commented, as relief surged through my chest. “I’ll stay here. Go and see.”
He looked at me for a moment, then dropped his weapon. It clattered to the ground and I gave him a small nod of encouragement.
He didn’t say a word as he ran past me. I didn’t look to see where he’d gone. Instead, I pulled up the hood of my coat, stuffed my hands back into my pockets, and sat beside the fire to wait.
