What power did Don have over him? “I don’t want anything to do with Don.” Please Jack.
“Doc, if I had a choice.” He left it there.
The five minute ride to my house was silent. Me, wishing I had the power to send Don back to Washington. It would be the best present ever. For all time.
Jack’s attention was focused. I wasn’t sure if it was on the snow-slick road or what was coming.
We stopped under the porte cochere. I put my hand on his arm. “Tell me what’s going on.” Don’s words still echoed in my consciousness. “I’m telling her everything.”
He shook his head. “It’s classified.” Jack isn’t only the sheriff. He’s ex-Delta Force. At least I think it’s ex.
Jack helped me out of the truck. This one was as high as the last.
“This is the last time.” He wrapped me in his arms and kissed me. His warm citrus scent filled my senses.
“Come in,” I whispered. “I’ll make a fire.”
He kissed me again. “Tomorrow night.”
It was a promise he wouldn’t keep.
