Face in the Mirror

“Sydney Russell, I love you. Will you marry me?” He slid the diamond onto her finger.
More tears rolled down her face. She nodded. “Yes, Nathan. I’ll marry you.”
He pulled her to standing and wrapped his arms around her waist then brushed her lips with a kiss.
At that moment, she remembered everyone else. They were cheering and clapping. She glanced at her dad. He nodded and smiled.
She whirled back around and looked Nathan in the eyes. “Wanna share my shake and fries?”
“If you’re sure?”
“I’m sure.”
A Devotional Moment
But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign Lord; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death. Keep me safe from the traps set by evildoers, from the snares they have laid for me. Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety. ~ Psalm 141:8-10
Sometimes it’s difficult to steer clear of evil, either because we don’t yet have our eyes fixed on God or because we get caught in the nets of evildoers and succumb to those evil ways. But, despite our shortcomings, if we repent and turn from those evil ways, God will forgive us. Unfortunately, sometimes other people are not as merciful as God, and no matter how much we’ve amended our bad behaviour, we are forced to endure our past forever being flung back at us. When this happens it becomes exceedingly difficult to remain positive in the Lord. We find ourselves wanting to give in to the thoughts of futility or unworthiness that will have us falling back into sinful ways.
In Face in the Mirror, one protagonist has to let go of his past sins, even when others throw them in his face. He has accepted faith but while the knowledge that he is forgiven is secure in his own mind and heart, some people are determined to undermine him—undermine both his faith and how others perceive him now.
Have you ever experienced other people throwing the past in your face? No matter how hard you try to distance yourself from your failings and those things which helped you to fall, your friends, family, co-workers constantly drag you back? When that happens, it is difficult to walk in God’s path. Fighting the darkness is hard, but if we have God on our side—and we do!—we can prevail against what happened before.
LORD, HELP ME TO NOT SUCCUMB TO MY PAST FEARS, AND BE WITH ME AS I WALK IN YOUR GRACE. ALLOW ME ALSO TO EXTEND GRACE TO OTHERS, NOT TO JUDGE THEM BY THEIR PAST, BUT TO SEE THEM FOR WHO THEY ARE NOW. IN JESUS’ NAME I PRAY, AMEN.
