His father watches, powerless to help his son, as Levi slips further between the cracks, and troubled Levi doesn’t seem to be too interested in helping himself.
But when his father’s simple bribe finally gets Levi out of the house to a physical therapy appointment, his encounter with former high school sweetheart, Linnea Fey, just might put him on the path to wholeness again.
PETER AND THE WOLF

But the Russian mob is a fierce adversary, and their roots in the community run deep. Even Pete’s long-time partner, Konstantin, who left the Demitrovic Bratva years ago to join the force, can’t seem to shake their hold on him.
When the mob orders a hit on Konstantin, Pete not only has to protect his partner from the Russian mafia’s best hitman, The Wolf, he also finds himself falling for the woman they used as bait—Konstantin’s beautiful, young niece, Natalia.
Pete and Natalia quickly discover they have far more in common than they realized—including the fact that they’re falling head over heels for each other. But there isn’t much time because The Wolf is at the door, and Pete Hunter may be the only one who can save them all.
THE FROG PRINCE
In this modern version of the fairy tale classic, The Frog Prince, heiress Darcy Haverford and ex-military beach bum Daniel Colvin find themselves shipwrecked on a desert island together.
Daniel may have the skills to keep them alive—but after living alone with Darcy for a week, he’s not sure he has the patience to keep from wringing her spoiled neck.
But the longer they spend together, the hotter it gets on the island, until the friction between the two of them rises to a fever pitch.
What neither of them knows is that a storm is coming, and the key to their survival may be both discipline and surrender.

Chapter 1
“Jack’s a simple boy.”
His mother’s words played back to him over ESPN’s feed and Jack sighed, crossing his arms and looking at her weather-worn face on the screen. Sports Center never failed to dig that footage out, every damned time he entered the ring. She’d given that interview years ago, unbeknownst to him, but it just wouldn’t die.
His mother stood on the front porch steps, shading her eyes from the Idaho sun, squinting across the fields at her boy. The camera panned, finding Jack dancing around a big, burlap sack full of dried beans in front of the barn, taking occasional jabs at his “opponent.”
“Not stupid, mind you, just simple.” Jack’s mother’s voice overlapped the sight of her son punching bean bags, his brow furrowed, dark eyes filled with purpose. “A simple boy, with simple needs and simple goals.”
The commentator’s voice broke in here. “If by simple, she means an undefeated rise toward the World Boxing Association’s heavyweight title, with seventeen wins, five knock-outs and twelve technical knock-outs, then Jack Hoffman is, indeed, a simple man, who clearly has a simple goal.”
Jack winced when his own face appeared on screen, one eye cut and bloody. He still hated seeing himself on television, flashing that lopsided grin in spite of his lumps, stating his purpose aloud: “I’m going to be the heavyweight champ of the world.”
“If Jack sets his mind to it…” His mother’s voice again. “There’s not much he can’t accomplish. If he says he’s going to do it, then he’ll do it.”
More footage of Jack, this time in the barn, lifting and tossing hundred-pound bags of beans. The commentator went on to explain that this was how Jack got his fighting nickname—Bean Bagger—comparing him, not for the first time, to Rocky Marciano, who worked two-hundred-pound bags instead of hundred-pound ones so he could learn to hit harder than his opponents.
“When do they play the Rocky theme song, eh?” Will Penny elbowed him, smirking at the withering look Jack gave his manager. Under these lights, Will’s age showed, the tufts of gray at his temples turning white, silver streaked through what was left of his dark hair.
“Can we get this over with already?” Jack muttered, running a hand through his own short-cropped, still jet-black hair.
“Let them spin their tales.” Will smiled slyly, cutting his gaze over to where Jack’s upcoming opponent—the current heavyweight champion of the world—was sitting with his entourage, waiting for the press conference to officially begin. “The more the public loves you, the better the endorsement deals will be when we win this thing.”
Jack snorted at that, rolling his eyes toward the ceiling, but didn’t say anything.
His mother was right about that, he supposed. He was a simple man, with simple needs and simple goals. The promise of money that had come along with his career as a boxer had never really interested him that much—aside from lifting his mother out of poverty, anyway.
The commentator had moved on from framing Jack as a “simple” underdog to focusing on Giancarlo “The Giant” Giordano—a six-foot-four, two-hundred and thirty-five-pound powerhouse and former mob enforcer from New Jersey turned pro boxer. Not that anyone mentioned his past much, at least to the big man’s face.
Jack watched the massive man on the screen wearing red trunks and a slash of a smile, even as he was throwing his ham-fist at his opponent’s head and tried to reconcile that image with the hulking figure in a three-piece suit sitting across the way. The Giant was fast, especially as big as he was—he moved like a dancer. Will had been pushing Jack to practice his footwork for almost a year in preparation for this fight.
The crowd watched, smiling at the screen, as the commentator told them that the champ met his current wife, young pop star Goldi Harper, on Dancing with the Stars, showing a clip of the two of them sashaying across the floor. Just seeing her face made his stomach do a slow roll, memories rushing his head, dizzying.
Jack looked away from the screen, trying to control his reaction. He knew this was all part of the hype, portraying The Giant as a flashy, flamboyant showboat, a man who loved to wear bling and talk big. Not that he couldn’t back it up—as the commentator noted, the champ was undefeated in nineteen fights, eighteen by knock-out. Not technical, either.
The man’s fans loved him, and the way his wife looked at him on the screen, it was pretty clear she loved him, too. Either that, or she was an amazing actress. He didn’t know which would be worse, to be honest.
Goldi had always been a beautiful girl. She was a good five years younger than her husband, with thick, honey-colored hair and bright, blue eyes that seem to stare right into him as the couple on screen faced the judging panel, both of them sweaty and out of breath. For a moment, Jack found himself remembering what she looked like after sex, just like that—panting and shiny and slightly open-mouthed, sweetly mussed and looking pleased with herself.
After the commentator informed them that the couple won that season of Dancing with the Stars, the story had moved on again to focus on The Giant’s business ventures—among other things, he owned The Giant Bread Company—and his ongoing tendency to get himself into trouble.
Will elbowed Jack again, nodding at the screen, where they were talking about the champ’s big parties, big life and, of course, big fights. Jack nodded. He knew what they were doing—this was a mythic setup, something David and Goliath for the public to fawn over. Jack was the “simple” opponent and The Giant was the “bad boy” champ.
Goldi stayed stuck in Jack’s head as the commentator relayed more of The Giant’s history, just briefly touching on a Chris-Brown-Rhianna sort of domestic violence incident that had been caught on camera last year. That got Jack’s attention and he frowned at the screen.
The sight of a big man on a parking structure security camera grabbing a handful of blonde hair made Jack wince. He couldn’t see Goldi’s face, but he knew it was her, and the video had no sound, but he could tell she was screaming. It was a short clip, nothing too damning, but it was enough.
Jack’s hands clenched into tight fists under the table.
“They’re going all-out,” Will muttered, glowering at the screen.
“Yeah.” Jack gritted his teeth, hearing the words, “no charges,” and “dismissed” from the commentator’s mouth.
Just a hint of bad, but nothing that would really stick, he thought. Jack glanced down the table at The Giant, but the man wasn’t watching himself on the screen. Instead, he was talking to another man sitting beside him, this one almost as big as he was—the Giant’s brother, Falco. He’d been a fighter, too, Jack knew. He’d gone pro, and judging from the footage Will had him watch, Jack knew Falco been a better fighter than his brother—but he’d been banned from the sport for putting foreign objects in his gloves and using horse stimulants.
Jack knew something else the commentator on Sports Center wouldn’t tell anyone—they called Falco “The Dentist,” reportedly because he had a gold tooth with a diamond in it, but Will told him that it was really because, back when they were mob muscle, Falco had specialized in torture. Specifically of the dental sort. To Jack, he looked like a suave,
savvy sort of sadist. The worst kind.
Jack glanced down at his hands—they’d made themselves into fists without any prompting from him at all—toughened and scarred from hitting beans encased in abrasive burlap, and wished he was in the ring right now. If he could skip all the preliminary hype, he would do it in a heartbeat. But Will insisted, and of course, Will was right. The man was his manager, but he was the closest thing Jack would ever have to a father, and he knew from experience that going against Will’s direction was a bad idea.
So he’d sit through the back story and this press conference—if they ever got the damned thing started—and listen to Frank Borland, the live Sports Center moderator, tell the television audience at home that the fight, scheduled two weeks from today, fifteen rounds at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, was the most anticipated of the century.
