Wild Case

“That’s good news. We’ve got something to go on.”
“I’m still trying to track down the two best friends and the ex-boyfriend.”
“Let me know what you find out.”
She smiled. “Well, I guess I should go mingle around and be social.”
Denise drifted away through the crowd.
“You think you can really be impartial with her?” JD asked.
“Of course I can. There are plenty of beautiful women here. And this contest isn’t all about beauty. There are other factors at play.”
“Hey, whatever happened to that Venezuelan chick and her gold?” JD asked.
“Yeah, I just gave her money for travel to bring her family back from Venezuela and get situated in an apartment.”
“That’s mighty generous of you.”
“It seemed like the right thing to do,” I said.
“What about the gold?”
“As far as I know, it’s still out there.”
“Did she tell you where it is?”
“Nope. But, from what she said, I got the impression it's buried at the bottom of the ocean somewhere.”
JD grinned. “We’ve got tools to find it.”
“We don’t even know where to look. And what the hell do we do with illegal gold when we find it?”
“We need to get back to Angelfish Key and dig for that treasure again. If it even exists.”
“You saw the coins. What more proof do you need?”
“I’m just saying, we dug a bunch of holes, and came up empty handed. I think maybe you hallucinated more gold than there actually was.”
I scoffed, dismissively.
We sipped our whiskey and watched the contestants mingle. Jack spied a woman across the room that caught his fancy. "Now she's got winning potential."
I watched the gorgeous brunette mingle about with a bright smile. Her dress was so tight it left nothing to the imagination. Her visage was captivating. She moved from group to group, working the room like a pro. She had long legs and toned calf muscles, accented by stilettos.
The woman had a graceful walk.
At least, until another contestant tripped her.
She fell to the ground and smacked the floor.
There were gasps around the room.
People rushed to her aid, lifting her from the ground, asking her if she was alright.
"I'm fine. Thank you. I'm just a little clumsy." She smiled and shrugged it off like it was no big deal.
She brushed the dust from her dress and kept flashing her perfect teeth.
I could see behind her eyes she was seething. Her smile was hollow. She glared at the contestant that had tripped her. If her eyes were lasers, the other woman would have spontaneously combusted.
Of course the other contestant played it off like an accident.
It wasn't overt. Trippy just decided to back up and stick her leg out at the precise moment to inflict maximum damage.
Trippy apologized profusely, but the brunette knew better.
I exchanged a glance with Jack who had seen the whole thing go down.
"I'm telling you,” Jack said with a grin. “This is going to be a helluva good time!”
