Hardboiled Crime Four-Pack Page 93

by Jack Bunker

I open the door. “Aren’t you supposed to be at work, Lieutenant? I know I am.”

“What’s the point of getting shot if you can’t get a mercy fuck on your day off?”

“It’s the middle of the afternoon, Gloria.”

She reaches out and caresses my neck, giving me that smile of hers.

“All work and no play makes Nob a dull boy.”

  “But productive.”

She slams me against the wall where I stay pinned by the horns of this dilemma. She kisses me hard and sure. She knows I’ll come around.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I would have never been able to write this book without my father's forever appreciated, retroactively beloved, constant and irritating corrections of my grammar and usage. It was he who taught me the beauty of language.

Invaluable guidance of Kristen Weber and Mark Haskell Smith saved me from plunging into the structural abyss. Early readers who encouraged this effort despite all odds include Tom Rosenstiel, Ira Ingber, Dan Burstein, Jeff Kalban, Clair Carmichael, my talented compadres in Clair's and the above-named Smith's workshops, and my beloved Oxnardian critique group.

Getting accolades from friends and family is a gimme. But when you send a baby manuscript into the cold hard world, getting accolades from total strangers is exponentially more heartwarming. For that I'd like to thank Ann Collette, who saw something in my writing that prompted her to propose to me when she agreed to be my agent. And to my intrepid publishers Lee Goldberg and Joel Goldman whose raucous enthusiasm is every author's dream. Let us hope their passion for this book looks like foresight in hindsight.

And most importantly, I'd like to thank the two women in my life who not only never wavered in their support for what must have seemed the acme of folly, but gave brilliant, insightful notes that doubtless saved me from enormous embarrassment. Karina and Zoë, I love you to death, and live to do so.
