Darkness Sleeping Page 14

by Jen Pretty

I stared at the bracelet as I lay in the dim light and let my lips form the words I had sang to him. It felt like years since I had last let them slip past my lips.

  "Across the plains of clover,

  Racing against the sun,

  Hooves against the hard stone,

  Now the day is done.

  Home before the darkness

  Safe and warm we'll be

  Together forever,

  My beauty and me."

I took a deep breath, ready to continue, but another word of magic crossed my lips, unbidden. The same word I had used to fix my room. I bit my lip and wondered what it would do. Not that I had much to lose at this point. If it blew up the entire world or killed myself, I wouldn't mind much.

"Edhwierft," I said, a tear slipping past my eyelid to trail down to the ground.

It was probably a trick of my mind, but suddenly Copper was laying right behind me. His hooves tucked up beneath him and his soft mane ticking my cheek. I wasn't sure if it was real or an illusion. How could I have possibly brought him back to life?

I didn't care if he was real or not. I curled into him, finally feeling warmer with his big body blocking the wind that was whipping down under the tree.

My eyes closed for just a moment, but I must have fallen asleep, because when I opened them again, a man was crouched in front of me, his hands held out over my fire as if he belonged there.

I moved back quickly and his eyes shifted up, latching on mine. He was handsome, if a bit older than I was.

  "Who are you?" I asked.

He smiled a crooked grin that lit up his face. His eyes flashed in the glow of the fire and he spoke.

  "My name is Merlin."

I didn’t respond, unsure if that should mean anything to me or not.

“I suppose the time has come for you to remember.” He leaned across the fire towards me and I attempted to back up, but Copper lay behind me. I didn’t have time to think about the fact I had brought Copper back to life, because Merlin tapped me on the forehead and said “Remember” in a deep booming voice.

My mind spun as though I was falling off a cliff and then it stopped.

“Oh!” I said with a gasp. “What have I done?”
