Adelyn looked at Brittany. “Don’t worry, it’s still me.”

“Adelyn,” Dad yelled on the phone.

“Dad, I need you to take me to Florida before it’s too

late,” she said in her normal voice.”

  “Too late for what?”

“I’ll tell you later. And don’t tell anyone. Not even

Mom. Just meet us at Annabel’s.”

“Okay. I’ll be there in five.”

Adelyn ended the call. “Drive normal.”

After they arrived, Dad opened the passenger door and

quickly stepped back. “Where’s my daughter?”

Adelyn looked into his wide eyes. “Dad, it’s me.” She

  got out of the truck.

Dad stepped back, shaking his head. “No, you’re not my

daughter. You’re one of those witches that took her over.”

“Yes, she is,” Marissa said and got out. “Now, come on.

We need you to take us to Florida before she turns into

Muma completely and eats everyone in town.”

“Okay,” Dad said in a shaky whisper and got into the

  patrol truck.

“Brittany,” Annabel screamed and ran up to her,

  embracing her.

Adelyn looked at them. “Stay here with your mom. She

  needs you.”

Brittany let go of her mother and hugged her. “Thank

you. Please stay strong. We need you more than you know.”

Adelyn had no expression and kept her hands to her

side, wanting to hug her back, but she felt sick to her

stomach when she thought about doing it. She knew Muma’s

evil mind was taking her over quickly. “I will do my best,”

she said and got into the front seat.

Marissa gave Brittany a quick hug and got into the back

seat. “Please don’t hurt me for asking, but do you want to

  switch seats?”

Adelyn looked at Dad, who nodded, and she switched

  with Marissa.

Dad took off out of the parking lot. When he was out

of Witchery Cove, he turned his sirens on and drove over

one hundred miles per hour back to Florida. While Dad

stopped for gas, Adelyn’s eyes rolled back. She fell into a

deep trance, and images of a woman forcing her to eat a rat

  came into focus.

“Momma, please stop,” Muma cried out in a younger

  voice.

“My name is Angelica to you,” the woman scolded.

“Now, shut up and eat the rest of the boy’s remains you

killed before they come here and find him.”

  “No, I’m full.”

Angelica grabbed Muma by the hair and yanked it back.

“Watch how you speak to me, or I’ll cut that lizard tongue

out I gave you from the way you spoke to me last time.” She

pushed Muma’s head away and got up.

“Let me look into the mirror, and I will finish him.”

“No, you nearly lost it the last time I gave it to you.”

“I won’t lose it. I promise. I just want to see how I was

supposed to look. I hate myself. I look like a monster.”

“Fine, I will give the mirror back to you, but before I

do, I will cast a spell on it.”

  “What kind of spell?”

“A spell … you will fear. Now, eat the boy while I go

cast it. He better be gone when I return.” Angelica walked

up the wooden stairs, and Marissa shaking the cage while

  yelling, came into focus.

Adelyn shook her head and sat up straight. “It’s still

  me.”

“What happened to you? You were in a trance or

  something for like an hour.”

“You don’t want to know.” Adelyn looked at Dad.

  “How long before we’re there?”

Marissa sighed and turned back around.

“About ten minutes, but we have a problem.”

  “What?”

  “Look behind you,” Marissa said.

Adelyn looked over her shoulder at five cop cars with

their lights on, who were in pursuit.

  “Why are they chasing us?”

Dad looked back at her and turned around. “Because

I’m not from this state. I tried to call it in, but they won’t

  listen to me.”

  “Stop the car,” Adelyn ordered.

  “What for?” Dad asked

  “Just stop.”

Dad slowed down and pulled off to the shoulder. She

looked back at the cop cars stopping but keeping their

  distance.

  “Marissa, let me out.”

Dad turned to Adelyn. “What are you going to do to

  them?”

Adelyn grinned. “I’m going to show them that the

paranormal world is real. Now, let me out before I blow it

  out with my mind.”

Marissa got out and opened her door.

“Adelyn,” Dad yelled, “don’t hurt them.

“I’ll try not to.” She got out of the truck and looked at

the cops, who were aiming their guns at her.

“Look at her red eyes!” a female cop shouted.

“What are you?” another cop yelled out and took cover

  behind the police car.

“She’s the devil,” Marissa yelled back.

“Get on the ground,” a male cop yelled.

“I will do no such thing,” Adelyn said in Muma’s voice.

“Now, allow us to leave or there will be consequences.”

“Ma’am,” an officer said in a shaky tone, “that’s not

going to happen. Who else is in the truck?”

Adelyn ignored him and raised her hand. “Welcome to

St. Augustine,” she said and lifted the police cars with her

mind and tossed them into the woods—leaving the cops

  running for their lives.

They got back into the truck and Dad took off.

At the tourist location, Dad got out and opened the back

door for Adelyn. She grabbed the mirror and looked at

Marissa and Dad. “I want you to stay here while I put it

  back.”

“No, I’m going with you,” Dad said.

“No, you’re not. I need to do this on my own.”

Marissa’s eyes filled with tears and she embraced her.

Adelyn pushed her back. “Don’t you dare touch me,”

she said in Muma’s voice and walked off.

  “Adelyn,” Marissa called out.

“Just let her go, sweetheart,” Dad said. “She’ll be back.”

Adelyn looked up at the moon as she walked down the

path. She reached the building and looked around, trying to

remember where she found the mirror. When she spotted a

pile of leaves next to an old tree with a split down the center,

she knew that was the spot. She placed the mirror back and

sat against the tree. “Muma, your mirror is back where it lay.”

After a while of sitting there, Adelyn grabbed her

stomach from a burning pain, and a black mass flew out of

her mouth and transformed into Muma.

Muma stared into her eyes. “You are now set free from

  my hold.”

After Adelyn’s body changed back, her smile quickly

turned into a frown. “How come my body still feels heavy?”

Muma studied her eyes for a few seconds and her lip

formed into a snarl. “Sula, show yourself!” she bellowed—

her black eyes filled with rage.

A black mass flew out of Adelyn’s chest, grabbed the

  mirror, and h
overed over them. Sula transformed into her

human form and looked at Adelyn, smiling. “Hello.”

Adelyn stepped back. “How are you still here when I

  sent you back to hell?”

“Because Muma forgot to mention you would need my

book of spells to do such a thing.” She looked at Muma.

“That was wise of you not to tell her, knowing she wouldn’t

leave her family and friends there if she truly knew I wasn’t

  dead.”

Muma flew at her, slamming her into the tree, but Sula

transformed into a black mass and broke away. Muma

looked up at Sula hovering above her. “My mirror won’t do

anything for you without a body.”

“Since I’m the new thief, I won’t need a human

anymore. And now, you will have no choice but to come

back to Witchery Cove and possess me.” Sula grinned in the

mirror, showing off her chiseled teeth. “I look so beautiful.”

“That will never happen,” Muma bellowed.

“Or will it? Tic tok … tic tok.” Sula flew away, cackling,

  and vanished into the trees.

Muma scowled at Adelyn, transformed into a black

  mass, and flew after Sula.

Adelyn slid down the tree, knowing that was just the

beginning. She needed to do something before Muma and

Sula’s soul became one. She looked up at the full moon,

desperate. Where would Sula place her spellbook?
