Ben hated hospitals. The disinfectant smell that tried to hide the scent of sickness and death, the too bright lights designed to make everything that was germ covered look pristine, it was nauseating. Being here brought too many memories.
He was completely thankful for a new project. Anything so he didn’t have to get dragged into pack life and the eternal quest to have him fenced in and reproducing by age thirty-five. He would find a mate when he was ready and no one was going to tell him otherwise.
His beast circled under his skin and he quickly walked out the back door of the hospital toward the parking lot. The woods beyond beckoned, a welcome temptation to blow off a little steam.
Stopping at his car, he snagged the gym bag he had stashed in the trunk and made his way past the tree line. The noise of the busy parking lot faded the further he got. In moments, he divested himself of his clothes, packing them neatly in the bag and placing them up in the nearest tree. He would be able to find it by scent later.
He'd come out of one too many shifts with missing pants and had started devising a plan to keep his clothes intact and in one place. Scattered in the dirt was not an option. He didn’t have an indefinite income to replace them, either.
Ben took a deep breath and let the lines between him and his beast blur. Muscles contracted and bones shifted, his body changing in a fluid movement. One moment he was walking across the forest floor, wincing as he stepped wrong on a pinecone, the next he was on all fours, bounding over fallen trees.
Freedom.
The scent of nature surrounded him and he let the human world leave him as he allowed the wolf to take over. Just a quick run and he could get back to it. But for now, his beast held the reins.
