Skye City: Survivors of the Plague (The Darkness of Emmi Book 2) Page 15

by R. D. Hale

Ever since my brother Arturo started working for a mysterious man, our lives changed dramatically. At first, Arturo had money and it went to his head, but then he disappeared. I thought I was never going to see him again, until he escaped... from prison.

That is when things really got crazy. Our friend Killow was infected by nanites which gave him superpowers, but also turned him evil. And now we have no idea where he is. Oh, and I forgot to mention our friend Dynah who also has superpowers and is non-evil.

The plague came and my best friend Lel died. It broke my heart, but I will not be beaten by this world. 'Live for the moment' is what Lel used to say, and I will move forward in her honour. I will prove to my brother I am not a kid any more, and I will show our rotten country that this dumb, blonde, 'bottom-leveller' is a force to be reckoned with.

'My name is Leo Jardine. I am an orphan from the slums of Medio city who chose military life as a way to escape extreme poverty. Some choice that turned out to be. I always knew our leaders were bastards, but when San Teria invaded our nation's great rival Nyberu, and the wider world, I discovered just how ruthless they are.

'The so-called Great War has been raging for nearly two years. It took about a week for me to lose count of the soldiers and civilians killed before my eyes. When I was stationed on the STS Cheriton, I thought it would make a nice break from the dodging of bullets and the sight of corpses. If only military life was that simple.'

The Transhuman Revolution is a prequel to book one in the award-winning Skye City series. It is set sixteen years before events in The Rise of an Orphan in the land of Nusantara where cybernetic augmentations are common-place. Technological advances offer a stark contrast to the living conditions of the impoverished masses who must upgrade to improve their chances of survival.

The Great War has been raging for two years and Nusantara is struggling to maintain its neutral status, given the threat it faces. Disaffected Anatolian soldiers are going AWOL, united by their hatred for the ruling San Teria party whose theocracy triggered nuclear Armageddon. Treason becomes the only option because the future of humanity is hanging by a thread. And thus The Rebellion is born.
