The Dust Fields of Underburb Page 2

by Leon Mauvais

Mar’Bo got up and brushed the twinkling glass off his body like powdered sugar plum. He stood for a moment. Feeling a new stance. His chest, though leaking, puffed out, swollen with…

His fingers itched for a pen. His throat hungry for a mic. His ears, thirsting, heard new beat his pierced body was laying down. He teetered slowly through the broken glass, till no more did it cut up his soles. His shoulders fell back, cresting like waves. They felt caped in feathers of gold. Something almost giddy, bubblier than bubbly hollowing out his bones.

He flapped his arms as he entered the empty kitchen, rising to Jax and his hidden message board.

His fingers like feathers, cruising through the dusty field, STORKS DREAM OF FLIGHT—S. Gate @ 8

The muscles in his cheeks roused, stretching wide.

Mar’Bo realized it was the first real smile flashed in weeks.

Tomorrow he’d wake not in Underburb.

  But where?

  Where would they land?

For Jax would be there too now.

I never have a boarding pass,

  I’m always just…

Not crashing. Never again for Jax. Mar’Bo would find a way to keep him safe in airbag tight hugs. His songs would carry them above. His beats. His words.

  Don’t need a boarding pass

  because we’re always soaring

Mar’Bo couldn’t feel the ground as he flew up to the master’s suite one last time.
