His delusions are a form of what gives him this “god like” image. The interpretation of his reality cannot be overturned or persuaded even if I could prove it to him in reality he still would not accept it. There are many references to most serial killers that I have come across. Usually they have some bizarre belief that others can hear their thoughts, inserting thoughts or their feelings are controlled by an external force. The referential belief that certain gestures, comments or song lyrics are intended for you, or the persecution belief when the subject believes others are out to get you. Others believe that bodily functions come into play where some kind of medical condition is making them commit the acts of violence. Some even take a religious standpoint believing their some kind of deity or serving a theological purpose. Steven doesn’t fit any of these symptoms. At best I can place him as a grandiose psychopath. He believes he is an extremely important person, an invaluable member of society. Referring to himself or “we” as God.
With this grandiose mentality he creates his own aggressive outlets towards society and most importantly towards individuals. He has lack of empathy or caring for others viewing his victims as playthings to be used and abused. He doesn’t look at them as human but no more than a piece of garbage. It is almost a form of Narcissistic behaviour that he demonstrates that is connected with his childhood. He had severe forms of mental and physical abuse from his father, his mother never stood up against his father in these acts. So because of this he feels he has the right to manipulate, control, using cruelty to exploit others to find some sense of his own version of truth.
I would also even go out on a limb and say he has an inverted conscience which means that his superego idealizes evil. Things that would normally produce guilt, insecurities and punishment in normal people. Steven seems to relish in these senses. The subject Steven Willis feels these when he is inducing pain and suffering in a malicious destructive manner towards his victims. So he placed it into another form creating another identity of himself. He can also be identified of having sadist tendencies hence forth why he needs to tell his story and wants my feedback.
So the subject fits all these categories. His aggressive style in nature feeds off a paranoid provocative attack in turn reflects his superego. This destructiveness in dealing with his narcissistic point of views is why he can do this with no signs of a conscience. His antisocial behaviour makes him a perfect killer because he is used to and wants to be alone. He doesn’t have to worry about anyone getting too close to find out what he truly is. He copies what he sees around him in facial expressions and his environment in order to blend in like a chameleon. He has learned to do this his whole life because he can’t relate to it because he doesn’t feel these emotions. In perfecting this it entails for people to trust him so he can get close enough for a kill. He likes to prolong the anguish and suffering to his victims making his destructiveness in the killing that much more pleasurable. He takes pride in planning his murders almost just as much as the execution. This predatory manner makes him a perfect killing machine because he is meticulous, careful and most of all patient. This comes with age and experience which the subject is a perfect fit for. The subject Steven Willis keeps referring to evolving or going to the next level of what a normal person would consider grotesque or inhumane. He goes from one ritualistic way of killing then goes into another fantasy that enthralls him, forcing him to change. We are dealing with a type of person I have never encountered before. To be honest if he didn’t turn himself in I don’t know if we ever would have caught him. He is indeed the definition of a Psychopath in a whole new category I have never encountered or read about. Essentially in a nut shell, he is all of the above; there isn’t a name for that type yet.”
Chief Ponce shrugs his shoulders and looks back at Detective Parsons for confirmation as he says,
“What do you think Parsons? You know more about this kind of stuff than I do. Does the Profile seem to match what he is saying?”
Cassandra had her arms folded across her chest as she leaned back against the wall replying,
“Yeah that sounds pretty accurate to me. Detective Jonathon Cratick has been profiling for a long time. His judgment in dealing with these types is usually spot on. What do we do now?”
Chief Ponce looks back at Jon and says,
“There is no question that you are the man we need in there right now Jon. I just need you to get the rest of those murders on tape. Get him to tell us where the bodies are and try to stay focused. That is all we can do for now. Who knows how many people this psychopath has killed over the years?”
Jon nodded and walked back into the interrogation room. As he stood in front of Steven, he stared into his eyes. His eyes were similar to were almost black, the pupils fully dilated. They had this intensity that lingered in the past. The look of fury and just pure rage fumigated inside him. That look in his eyes reminded him of just how almost nonhuman Steven was. It was almost as if there was nothing humane about him at all. Jon leaned over the table and said,
"That man that you killed. That man was just some drunk at a bar and you pretty much castrated him for it because you couldn't handle some drunken remark? Do you even know how far off the spectrum of sanity you are?"
Steven rolled his eyes as he leaned back in his chair replying,
"You are not listening to me! I know you are smarter than this Jon. I know you have it in you to see past the chaos and see what this is truly about. I am not off the radar and I am defiantly not insane. Maybe in society’s eyes I am. But not yours Jon, not yours. You have the ability to see past all of this. I know you can because I know everything about you. I know you have it in you just like me."
"That's the problem Steven, you are not listening to me. I am nothing like you. I catch people like you. See the thing is I don't need to try to understand you. I already know what you are. I defiantly know what you are capable of. I just want to get to the bottom of all these murders."
Steven rose from his seat. His shackles clanking against the chrome steel table and his seat. His face turned into this wicked, wrinkled almost deformed demon like state.
"Don't you dare placate me you miserable piece of shit! I know what you are! I know who you are! And most importantly I know more about you than anyone else on this little planet. I've been trying so damn hard to get you to come to this conclusion yourself. But I guess I am going to have to spell it out for you. A……….L………E…….….X………A……....N……….D………..…E………..R!"
Chapter 7
Jon shot off his seat gripping Steven around his shirt, pulling him closer to his face. He felt all of his blood boiling inside of him. Every part of him wanted to tear at Steven, ripping him apart limb by limb. His voice was now quivering as he said,
"What the hell did you just say?"
"Can't you spell Jon? Try hooked on phonics, it worked for me!"
"I don't know how you got that name, or who the hell you have been talking to. But you must be mistaken."
"No, no, no, you see Jonny boy, I think I have the right guy. In fact I think I have the right brother. Like I said Jon, I have been waiting for you all of my life.
"How do you know that name?! How in the hell do you know my brother’s name?"
Steven let out a sick laugh and said,
"Oh Jonny boy, please your brother was just lost and I showed him the way. Oh are you now going to judge me Jonny boy? Huh? You aren’t going to analyze me? You’re not going to go out there with the rest of the flock and gossip about what I am doing here? Or maybe you’re going to go cry in self-pity about that brother of yours?”
Jon turned around, his eyes inflamed in rage as he said,
“What did you just say to me?”
“Oh I think you already know about that little part of my process. Let's not go all school yard. You know what I know, I know what you know. Let's just cut the crap and get to the good stuff. Let's grab that big slab of meat, carve away the fat and take a big bite shall we?”
“Steven if you know what’s good for you, you will shut up about my brother you sick little prick.”
"Ohhh, I hope I didn't hit a nerve there did I? Oh come on we can talk about poor little Alex can't we?”
The door opened and Cassandra grabbed Jon by the arm. She dragged him back towards the door and said,
“Just let it go Jon, take a break, you can get back at it in fifteen.”
Steven smiled as he sneered,
“Yeah that's right Jon, stay down. Take your treat like the good little doggy you are, and while you’re at it, remind me to send some Scooby snacks to your brother. He was a good little doggy too.”
Jon yelled back in a fit of rage with a black intensity in his eyes,
“You arrogant son of a bitch!!!!”
Jon leapt at Steven once again his eyes filled with anger. Two other officers came into the room and grabbed Jon off of Steven before he could land a fist. They pulled him out of the room as Steven was still laughing when the door shut behind them. Cassandra turned, stunned, and looked into Jon’s angry eyes as she yelled,
“What the hell exactly happened in there? What does he know about your brother and why are you so angry about it?”
Jon snapped,
“It's nothing, I can deal with it I just have to know what the hell his motives are. That's all!"
"No, no you can't just leave a question like that unanswered. It's just not that simple Jon. What does he mean by Alex? Is he talking about a brother of yours?"
"I don't want to talk about it. I need to know what the hell he knows."
Cassandra sighed and said,
"Look Jon, you're a good cop, and a damn great profiler. I want to get at this piece of shit more than anybody as well. But I have to know everything. What is he talking about?"
Jon stared at Steven through the two way mirror. He was feeling resentment and a whole new level of hatred that he had never felt before. Not taking his eyes off of the serial killer he realized he had to let her in. Jon slowly slumped up against the wall, and slid down to a crouching position as he said,
"Do you remember when he said, I have been waiting for you all my life. I think he really meant that statement. He knows something about my brother. I need to find out what that is."
"Well what happened to your brother? Why is this getting under your skin so much?"
"Because............because my brother was a paranoid schizophrenic. He was delusional and eventually killed himself."
"Oh my god, Jon we have to get you off of this case. You are too close to this. I can't have you interrogating someone if you are that involved in this investigation."
Jon snapped out of his trance and looked at Cassandra as he said,
"I can't be taken off this case. I am too close to uncovering what his motives are. We know that all of this stemmed from an early childhood of mutilation and rage. His father beat him severely to the point where he took pleasure in torturing animals and eventually killing his first victim. That poor girl, and then his father. He has been on a downward spiral of killing sprees ever since. Since then his motives changed, he wanted to evolve into something more. He wanted his rage to manifest into something more."
"Yeah so what? We can get another interrogations officer in here to finish the job. Jon listen to me, you can't be on this case anymore."
"But I have to be on this case. We don't have a choice. So yes he might have a connection to my brother but we have to push forward with this. If I don't stay on this case, he is just going to clam up and not say another word. Then just wait for his death sentence. If I can just stay with him for a few more hours, I know I can get the rest out of him. He wants to tell this, he wants me to find out why he chose me for this. Somehow, someway this has something to do with………. my brother."
"What is it? What's the matter?"
"Get me every hospital with a Psych ward and their records on Steven Willis in the British Columbia area. He said he was planning on going to University out there before he killed that guy when he was hitchhiking. He must have some kind of medical record of a mental illness. He wouldn't have been admitted by anyone. He is a psychopath, no one would be able to tell if he was insane or not, let alone have a conscience. He is too good at lying and covering his tracks. No one would know if he had anything really wrong with him. If he was going to check himself in he probably wouldn't use his real name but an alias. If you can't find any records on Steven try medical records on my brother."
Detective Parsons nodded and gave Jon a look of concern. She then asked,
"Jon why do you think he would check himself in an insane asylum or a mental ward in a hospital?"
"Because he knew my brother. He knew who he was. My brother was admitted into a mental ward and moved around in the British Columbia area about fifteen years ago. The reason he was moved around so much was because of the medical insurance. Whatever place we could afford is where he would end up. If Steven really knew my brother, that's where he would have met him."
"Jon if that's the case then this is way deeper than we ever anticipated. We can't let you go back in there. If he went through all this trouble to meet your brother and is bringing it up now. Then there is something he wants you to know, and I have a feeling nothing good is going to come out of it. I can't let you do this!"
"Cassandra it's the only way we can truly get him to talk about the murders. I have to do this. Please, just please let this go and ride it out."
Cassandra Parsons rolled her eyes as she replied,
"Alright Jon, but in the end this might not be good. You get everything else out of him, do you understand! Find out what he knows about your brother and get him to confess all of the murders on tape. That way we will have undeniable proof to send him away."
Jon nodded, he made his way over to the door and gripped the handle so tight that his knuckles went white. He turned his head slightly looking back over his shoulder as he said,
"I just want to say something to you Cassandra. There are going to be a lot of things in this room within the next hour that you're not going to like. I always tried to remain to be a good cop but sometimes we stray away from a path that we set for ourselves. Whatever happens, whatever is said, just keep that tape and camera rolling."
"What is that supposed to mean? Jon?"
Jon opened the door and made his way back into the interrogation room. The officers moved quickly about to grab him by the arms. "No, its fine, I’m totally fine. Just give us some alone time guys."
The officers looked at each other, then looked back at Steven, towards Jon again and nodded. Jon walked past them briskly and sat down in the chair across from Steven. The florescent light that flooded the room burned bright into his retinas, it took a moment for them to adjust. He then focused on Steven and leaned forward placing his arms folded across the steel table and said,
"Alright Steven, I’m curious, what do you know about my brother?"
Steven then leaned forward and smiled that Chester cat smile that stretched across his face from one ear to the other, making his wrinkles protrude. He gave that sly slick tone that rolled off his tongue as he said,
"So Jonny boy wants to know about his brother. Funny just a minute ago you were throwing around that temper tantrum of yours like a little kid having a fit in a candy store that didn’t get his favorite treat. Now you want to know what I have to say?"
"I don't need this."
Jon got up and made his way to the door and as he was grabbing the handle he heard that voice that seemed to slither from behind his ear like a snake.
“Alexander Cratick, was smaller than you, five foot ten, weighed about one hundred eighty pounds give or take. Dirty blonde hair, brown eyes; the gentle type. Never was much of a talker but when he opened up to someone he had plenty to say. He was diagnosed with Narcissism and paranoid schizophrenia when admitted and escaped from Sylas Jenkins Mental Asylum British Columbia, 2001. You remember that year? Don’t you Jonny Boy.”
Jon slowly let go of the door handle and turned around.
"How did you know that? How could you possibly know that? Were you admitted or incarcerated in that place when Alex was?"
"Oh I know a lot more than that Jonny boy. You see I had a slight moment of misjudgment about myself at the time and admitted myself into the asylum. I thought I could control what I am through therapy and drugs. Now I never fully admitted any of my murders but dare I say some of the medical professionals thought I had some deep seeded problems. See when you willingly admit yourself you can sign yourself back out whenever you want. But some people, well they don't have that luxury. Some people are forced to stay contained in confinement in a place like that. If they are at risk at harming themselves or anyone else that is. When I first saw your brother thrown into the pit as we used to say. I figured he looked about the same as any other cracked out lunatic that was put into that place. However never judge a book by its cover they say."
"What? You mean, you knew my brother?"
"No Jonny boy, I didn't just know your brother. I felt your brother. I understood your brother more than anyone else ever could. The first time I took real notice to him was during my first day in the cafeteria area. See everyone would get there pan of food and stand in line up for their meds. Your brother would always take his meds, do the same old routine of opening his mouth to the nurse; roll his tongue around his mouth to let them know that he swallowed them. Ah but this is where it got interesting. He would always make his way to the bathroom after he ingested his “White Rabbit“."
