Chapter 1
Eva
It’s been one year.
One year since I moved to the city, hoping that I would be able to catch a big break, and one year since I left behind my scheming asshole ex. Not that my distance and the time that had passed since we’d seen each other really mattered to him.
Angrily, I swiped through the message he had just sent me. It was all the same, like they always were. I miss you. I want you. I deserve you.
Right.
He deserves nothing from me, but that hasn’t stopped him from trying to find me for a year. I know that because I’ve caught people staring at me. Watching me.
I’ve turned away letters and packages, claiming that I’m not her. I’m not Eva Hamel, lawyer extraordinaire. I’m Eva Brown, waitress.
Cocktail waitress.
At a strip club.
It’s been a definite change for me, but every single day, when I wake up and do whatever I want to without worrying about what he’s going to say or do to me, I rejoice. And since today has been exactly one year since I saw his stupid face?
It’s time to celebrate.
My phone pings again, but this time when I look at it, I smile. My best friend since I moved to the city, Cherie, is waiting outside. I’ve never been one for dancing, and not really one for drinking, but she begged me to let her take me out.
Somehow, she got us into the hottest bar in town. Slipping some cash into my bra, I twirl one more time in front of the mirror. Skintight black dress? Check. Strappy stilettos? Check. I’ve swept my thick auburn hair up into a bun and have on ridiculous dangly earrings that flash and throw the light whenever I move.
Okay. Taking a deep breath, I smooth my dress down. I look good. I feel good.
Cherie is waiting, so before I let myself change my mind, I head downstairs, making sure to lock my door behind me. Although I still don’t think that David has managed to find me here, I’m not in the mood for an unpleasant surprise when I get back.
Chapter 2
Roque
“Remind me again why I have to be here?” Throwing back the whiskey that I’m holding, I turn and scowl at my brother, Arlo. He’s dressed in a tight black t-shirt and dark jeans, and even though he doesn’t look like he fits in here at all, I’ve noticed that he’s turning heads right and left.
He’s noticed, too, and he’s getting a big fucking head about it.
“You need to be here because they need to see that our family isn’t divided.” Arlo doesn’t look at me when he talks to me. He’s too busy staring at a leggy blonde that just walked by. I roll my eyes, uninterested in the stick-thin pussy that he loves.
I’d much prefer to sink my cock into something with some curves, some dark hair, some big eyes that just beg me to fuck her. Fuck. I have to adjust on my seat a little as I think about taking home the perfect girl. It’s been far too long. Family business will do that to you – keep you distracted and make it difficult to focus on anything else.
Arlo slips off of his stool and starts towards the blonde, but I reach out, grabbing him by the arm. “Focus with your brain, not your dick,” I snarl at him. He tugs a little against me, but then turns back, rolling his eyes.
“You need to focus more with your dick sometime, brother. You’d be a hell of a lot more fun if you actually got laid once in a while.” Without waiting for a response, he grabs another glass of whiskey from the bar and tosses it back.
“Was that yours?” I don’t remember ordering any more, and honestly? I just want to get out of there. Make the drop, meet the guys, and go.
“Does it matter? Who in the fuck is going to stop us?” Arlo shrugs and sits down with a sigh, watching the door.
He is right. Nobody is going to stop us. We could do whatever we wanted in here, or to anyone, and everyone would just look the other way. We’re basically invincible, or we will be, after we showed everyone that our family is still united and we put the threat that we’re facing in its place.
Owning your own bar has its advantages, but as I eye my brother getting drunker by the second, I can’t help but think that it has its disadvantages, as well.
My grandfather was supposed to live forever, but he didn’t, the old bastard. That means that my dad is now in charge of the family, but his baby brother hadn’t seen it that way. Leave it up to my dad to take care of things, though. A quick bullet between the eyes and he was gone.
A private burial under new construction and he was gone for good. I know that my brother hates working construction, but someone has to do it, and he has the muscles and the brains for it. Fuck, it’s not that he’s stupid. It’s just that he is better suited to the lifestyle. That, and he doesn’t have to deal with as many people as I do.
Before I can think much more about the changes going on in the family, the door to the bar swings open and Matty, one of our close family friends walks in. He glances around the room, obviously appreciating all of the ass on display, but then makes a beeline to the two of us through the crowd.
Good man.
“Roque. Arlo.” Matty glances at the glass of whiskey in my brother’s hand and gratefully accepts it, throwing it back without a wince. “They’re not coming.”
“What the fuck do you mean that they’re not coming? Of course they are.” Arlo slams his hand down on the bar, causing a few people to turn and look at us. “They have to come.”
This meetup is supposed to be a big fucking deal. Our family owns the city, and everyone knows it, but my uncle’s associates and sons have been some of the last to admit defeat after we killed him. Tonight is when they’re supposed to come and pledge allegiance to us, but if they don’t…that’s a problem.
Matty shrugs, but he doesn’t step back. I like that about him. We don’t like to hang out with pussies, and there are a fucking ton of them in his world. Matty’s not technically family, but he’s close enough that he gets a pass for a lot of the shit he does. But if he ever started acting like he was afraid of someone in the family? That wouldn’t fly.
“I ran into Tony, their
runner. He told me that they’ve decided to reconsider the agreement and decide whether or not they really back your dad.”
The rage coming off of Arlo is fucking palpable, but there’s no reason to get upset. I learned that a long damn time ago. My uncle’s family made their decision and they would pay for it, but getting pissy about it in the fucking Claw and Crown? You’re going to have a bad time.
“There’s nothing to do tonight,” I tell the two of them. “Arlo, you get back to the house and let Pops know that the shit fell through. Matty, enjoy one on me.” I slip some cash from my pocket and toss it to the barkeeper.
It’s always one fucking thing or another. This is why I don’t have the time to settle down. No matter what Ma wants, which is some fucking grandkids, I just don’t have the time to give them to her. Nevermind that most of the girls in this town are terrified of me just because of my name, but that doesn’t help much.
Arlo stomps through the crowd and heads out the door, holding it for someone to walk through. I raise my eyebrows, slightly impressed that my baby brother is finally learning manners, when the girls who walk through catch my breath.
Well, not the first one. My eyes slide over and off her like she’s invisible, but the second one has me completely focused. She looks a little nervous, like she’s never been here before, and since I’ve never seen her, I’m guessing that’s right.
The way she pauses when she walks in the door and her tight little dress clinging to her body has me instantly paying attention. It’s a bondage dress, designed to show off all of her curves, and ends mid-thigh. I have the sudden urge to go to her and push her dress up her thighs to see how short I can make it.
My cock instantly springs to attention as she looks at me, but then her friend pulls her arms and guides her to the other side of the bar. I’ve already dismissed Matty and Arlo, and I slide off of my stool and meet them, standing so close to the bar that she has to scoot past me, her curves brushing up against my bulk.
“Can I help you?” My voice is deep, but the way that her eyes fly open when she hears me talk surprises me. Tentatively, she reaches out and touches the top of the bar like she’s trying to keep from falling over.
In those heels, I’m honestly surprised that she can even walk, and I grab her elbow to steady her. immediately, there’s a shock of electricity straight to my core as her skin touches mine. My cock is hard and throbbing now, and I’m grateful that the bar is a little dark.
“I’m sorry, I’m just here to get a drink with my friend.” The girl glances over her shoulder at the friend she’d walked in with. As if on cue, her friend leans on the bar and orders. She’s obviously had a couple before getting here, and I hope that she wasn’t the one to drive.
What the fuck? The thought passes through my mind before I can stop it. I’m not the kind of person to give a shit about what other people do, but the thought of this gorgeous girl in the car with someone who shouldn’t be driving makes my stomach clench.
“You’re celebrating.” I should probably let go of her elbow, but I saw the way some of the other men in here looked at her. She’s mine, and I’m not going to let her go. “What are you celebrating tonight?”
I swear, I must have thrown her for a loop reading her like that, but it wasn’t like it was hard. Her hair and makeup are on point, and she’s new to the Claw and Crown. Somehow, the two of them got an invitation to come, but nobody’s come over to meet them yet, so I’m not sure who to thank.
“We’re celebrating her move!” Her friend leans over to me, wrapping her arm around the girl I’m talking to. “Eva moved here a year ago today and left behind a real sack of shit, and we’re out celebrating that!” Her voice is far too loud and I feel, rather than see, everyone turn to look at us, but I don’t give a shit. I’m used to being the center of attention, but it’s obvious that this Eva isn’t.
She pales.
“A real sack of shit?” I ask, lightly tucking a loose tendril of hair behind her ear. “You want to tell me about him?” It’s easy for me to lightly trace my fingers along her cheek as I drop my hand. She doesn’t pull away from me and I feel my lower abs clench together as I think about pushing her up against the bar.
She’s a really little thing, and there’s no way that she could pup up much of a fight. The thought of shoving her into the bar and getting my hands under that dress make my pulse race.
She opens her mouth to say something, but before she can respond, her friend pushes her into me.
“You! You’re the perfect one to help us celebrate! Do you know how we can get into the back room here? I heard that it’s amazing and the perfect place for hanging out without it being too loud.”
Eva pulls away and grabs her friend. “I’m so sorry,” she tells me. “She…I guess she drank before we got here and she’s obsessed with getting into the back room. I have no idea what she’s talking about, really, but we’ll leave you alone.”
The last thing that I wanted was this little beauty to leave me alone. I haven’t taken a woman to bed in a long damn time, but now that I’d laid eyes on Eva, there wasn’t any chance that I was going to let her just disappear.
I growl a little and run my hand through my hair. What I really want to do is twist my hand into her hair and pin her in place while I run my tongue up her neck. My cock is throbbing urgently now and I have to focus on her face to keep from doing something rash.
But yeah, I knew how to get into the back room. My family owns the Claw and Crown, and the back room is reserved just for official business. Girls aren’t official business, everyone knows that, but I’d never seen a girl like Eva before.
“I’ll take you to the back room,” I tell them. Eva shivers under my gaze and I graze my fingers down her shoulder and her arm. She’s covered with goosebumps, but when I take her into the back room, I know that I can warm her up.
“Really?” The drunk friend looks overjoyed, but before we can even move from the bar, she turns and throws up. I pull Eva out of the way, easily lifting her small frame and tucking her close to me to move her. Her heart is beating wildly and I can feel it pounding against my chest.
“Get her out of here!” As soon as the words are out of my mouth, two members of our cleanup crew are at my side. One lifts her in a fireman’s carry and heads to the door while the other cleans the floor. “Check her wallet,” I call after him, “and get her home safe.”
“What about me?” Eva struggles a little to get out of my grasp and I put her down, but I don’t let her go. Now that I’ve seen her, I have no interest in letting her out of my sight again.
“You and I are going to the back room,” I tell her. “I heard from a drunk little bird that you have some celebrating to do.”
Chapter 3
Eva
What the hell just happened?
I’d planned for a fun night out with Cherie, but in the first five minutes of us getting to the exclusive Claw and Crown, she’d thrown up on the floor, I’d been eye-fucked by literally the hottest guy I’d ever seen, and now I was following him to the back room.
Honestly, I have no real idea what goes on in the back room, but any excuse to get out of the thudding music they’re playing in the main area of the bar sounds good to me.
At the door to the back room I pause, and the guy holding my hand looks back at me before smirking and pulling me forward. It feels like my feet were moving on their own accord. Each step is taking me closer to doing something that I’m sure I should be doing, but I don’t give a shit.
I want this guy. His dark eyes make me shiver and I feel a longing rise up in me that I hadn’t felt in a long damn time. When he pulled me close and held me against his chest? Damn, the throbbing between my legs grows stronger and I have to clench them together. I feel my heat getting wet just looking at him.
This is the problem with being alone for so long. You start to go a little crazy and even do stupid shit like go into a back room with the sexiest guy alive. I pause, wanting to get a reall
y good look at him before I follow him into the closed room.
He is impeccable dressed, with a custom suit that is perfectly tailored and looks like it probably cost more than I make in a month. Scratch that, two months. The watch he wears has a huge face and peeks out from the cuff of his shirt, and I can see gorgeous cufflinks twinkling there.
It’s not just a watch that peeked out at me from his cuffs. I can see some tattoos there, and I can’t help but wonder if he’s completely covered. Uptight lawyer obsessed with the tattooed bad guy is such a cliché, but I can’t help it.
Besides, I’m not a lawyer anymore. I’m a waitress, and the last time I checked, waitresses can have a lady boner for any guy they wanted without people giving them a second look.
“You coming?” The guy’s voice throbs through my core, and I look up at his face. He’s waiting for me to follow him through the door. Even from here I can see that the inside of the back room is a little dark and that there’s not anyone else in there. Pieces of furniture are scattered around, and there is a private bar in the back.
Do I really want to go into this private room with this guy?
Hell, yeah, I do.
It’s just that he was so damn big. I swear, his muscles have muscles, and when he moves, I can see them all twisting under his perfect suit. The thought of what he would look like naked makes my mouth water a little and I finally nod.
“I’m coming,” I tell him, as I step into the room. As soon as he shuts the door behind me, the sound from outside is cut off and I can only hear a dull throb of the music. I sigh, relaxing, but not for long.
The guy takes me by the hand and pulls me into the middle of the room, under the light. He walks around me slowly, looking me up and down, and I have the distinct feeling of being for sale.
What the hell am I doing here? The way he’s looking at me makes it very clear that we’re not just here for friendly conversation and the same flame that I tried to put out a few moments ago by squeezing my legs together roars back to life.
