“So, he used the drug to suppress her,” Burke said. “And once she was subdued, he killed her. He disguised it as serial killing, but he wasn’t careful enough.”

“That’s genius,” Andrews said. “I finally see why everyone calls you such a genius. You really are amazing.”

“What about the taxi driver?” Lory asked.

“He killed him because he risked identifying him,” Robin said. “I think we have enough evidence to arrest him. I am sure the rest of it will unravel as we go along.”

“Let’s have him in for an interrogation,” the Captain said. “It seems we might have our killer. Good work, Detective Matthews.”

  “Thank you, Sir,” she said.

“Come on,” Burke said. “Let’s get moving. Robin, you coming?”

“Nah, you guys go,” Robin said. “I think I will sit this one out.”

Burke shrugged and walked away, and Robin made her way to Kyle.

“I am sorry it wasn’t Danvers,” she said.

“I know,” he said. “But you are right. I need to accept my fate and move on.”

He took her hand in his and smiled at her softly.

“Thank you for everything you did for me, Robin,” he said. “I honestly don’t think I could have made it this far without you. I almost became a criminal, but I am glad that you stopped me. Thank you for not deserting me.”

“How could I desert you, Kyle?” she asked. “You were there for me in even the darkest of times. When no one believed me, you did. You have always been my best friend. And Kyle, it’s time you should know that I love you. I care for you more than a friend. And I don’t know how we are going to work things out. We are so broken and traumatized by our own pasts.”

“I love you too, little bird,” he said with a small smile. “Good job with that case. You solved it perfectly.”

“If I wasn’t so hung up on Danvers, I would have seen it sooner,” Robin admitted. “He was the only one with any real motive. If Rosemond hadn’t pointed it out–.”

“He is a good guy,” Kyle said. “I like him. He is sharp and shrewd, and he sees through things. I am glad you found him. I can see how much better you are now that you are receiving therapy by him.”

“I like him too,” Robin said with a smirk. “He has a good heart. He is the one who warned me that you might try to kill Danvers.”

“Yea, he is smart,” Kyle said. “I will give him that.”

Robin’s phone started to ring, and she groaned to herself, wondering what it could be.

“Matthews,” she said, picking it up.

“It’s Andrews,” the voice on the other side said. “We have another murder.”

  “What?” Robin gasped.

“Yeah,” he said. “Danvers has just been found dead.”

  Chapter Twenty

Adrian confessed to his crime the moment he was arrested. Robin knew that men like him were all talk and nothing else. When he was arrested, he didn’t have it in him to hold the ruse for even a minute. He confessed to everything and was charged with Kaila’s murder. Robin was relieved after the arrest, finally able to relax, knowing one murderer was behind bars.

It turned out that the taxi driver was blackmailing Adrian for money, which is why he eventually killed him. It was the most sensational case the town had ever experienced. Everyone was talking about it. What everyone was talking about even more was that the defamed cop had been the one to solve it all.

As for Gary Dane, he was still at large. Robin had told the Captain about the incident, and he had vamped up the search for him. Robin still shuddered whenever she thought of him, wondering where he was hiding and when he would jump out suddenly. She was afraid that he would go after the people she loved. After all, he was cruel, vicious, and jealous enough to do it.

The internal investigation had officially come to an end. Unable to find anything against Robin, they had decided to drop the rest of the charges, provided that she didn’t mess up again. She and Kyle were free people again, but all these celebrations were contaminated.

Danvers’ murder corrupted every single happy memory. He was found hanging from his ceiling in his office, no sign of struggle on his body. No one was seen coming in or out of the building, and no evidence could be found. It was the perfect crime anyone could commit.

What they had found was evidence; evidence of illegal activities that Danvers had been participating in for decades. As it all detangled, another fact came to light. They found evidence proving that he had killed Rose that night, and Kyle was finally proven correct. He was then a changed man. He smiled more and laughed more, reassured that his Rose had been avenged. All of the police’s attempts to find the murderer was for naught.

We couldn’t figure out who did it. And with the number of enemies he had, plenty of people had the motive.

“So, then I thought that perhaps I had left my keys at home,” Jim was saying. “And as expected, they were home. I reached the driveway to see Abby standing at the door, holding them up.”

“He always forgets his things,” Abby said with a laugh. “I am used to it by now.”

“Well, I am just glad you guys are doing well,” Kyle said. “Especially you, Abby. I know this pregnancy has been hard.”

“Well, what can one do,” Abby said, laughing. “What about you, Kyle? Are you seeing anyone?”

Kyle looked toward Robin, who raised an eyebrow.

“Perhaps,” he said. “I haven’t talked it out with her yet.”

“Well, if you love her even half as much as I love Abby,” Jim said. “Then don’t let her go.”

“So, what’s next for you, Robin?” Jim asked.

“The Executioner,” she said. “He is still out there. I am going to find him, and he is going to pay for all the people he killed.”

Robin’s mind went over everything she had found recently. The crest belonged to the Blackwell family, and Robin was now free to pursue the case. She planned on going to the town and finding out everything she could about the Executioner’s family. Understanding this man was the key to catching him, Robin knew that now. She had to uncover everything she could about this man. The child who had grown up to be a murderer. Robin had to find everything that she could about him.

“I thought he had disappeared,” Abby said softly.

“He will be back,” she said. “And when he does, I will be ready for him.”

“What are you going to do?” Kyle asked.

“I am going to track down his family,” Robin said. “I have to figure out his past and my past.”

“Robin, don’t do anything drastic,” Abby said. “Please, I need my sister safe.”

“I know,” Robin said. “I know. Don’t worry. I will be careful.”

“Plus, I will be with her every step of the way,” Kyle said. “I will look after her, don’t you worry.”

“Well, I guess I can trust Kyle,” Abby said, laughing. “Even though I can’t trust you, Robin. You always end up getting into trouble.”

Everyone laughed when suddenly Robin’s phone started to ring loudly.

“Excuse me,” she said, leaving the table.

“Hello?” She said, picking it up.

“Did you like my gift?” the voice whispered on the other side.

“Who is this?” She asked, feeling a chill run down her spine.

“I did it for you,” the voice whispered. “It was a gift. Did you like it?”

“What do you want?” Robin hissed.

“Danvers,” the voice said. “It was a gift. You couldn’t get to him, so I got to him for you.”

“Who is this?” Robin said as the dial tone echoed on the other side. He hung up on her!

Suddenly, a memory flashed before her eyes. Her head started to ache and throb, and she felt exhausted. The memory was clear in her mind, and as the events flashed before her eyes, she was frozen with disbelief. It was all finally clear to her. She finally remembered it all. She knew what had happened in the ba
sement and why he wanted revenge.

“Kyle,” she called out. “I will be back in a while.”

Before anyone could say anything, she ran out, determined to somehow get in contact with the killer. She needed to tell him that she remembered it all, that she knew.

It was dark outside; the moon’s light was shining down onto the street. She didn’t know where she was going or what she was going to do; all she knew was that she had to get out.

By the time she heard the footsteps behind her, it was too late. Someone hit her on the back of her head, and a sharp pain ran through her head.

  And then, she blacked out.
