James got Achan’s note the moment he got up from his bed. It was short and simple, saying to meet him at the edge of the forest. James walked beyond the courtyard gates unsure of what to expect since he hadn’t seen his friend since he got out of the infirmary. Maybe there was some important information he had to relay. He sure had gotten a lot recently.
Achan was nowhere to be found, but James wasn’t afraid. Now that he had an eidolon, he was sure he could at least keep a squirrel or two at bay. It wasn’t a matter of confidence, rather surety. He had already seen what the forest had to offer, and he had even engaged in interactions with Langorans and a Prattlian. Even if one of those two appeared, he was sure he could hold them off until the cavalry arrived. Arimus was firm in telling him not to unleash his eidolon, but surely he would be forgiven for stopping an approaching enemy.
James turned around suddenly as he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He made a defensive stance, but then relaxed when he saw Achan step through. Achan smirked as soon as he came into view. He was carrying his eidolon, beautiful and deadly, in his hand. Holding it like a torch, Achan stepped forward, smiling widely. James placed both hands on his hips and waited for his friend to approach.
“You know James,” Achan said. “They say a Sage can level a tree with just one swing…”
James laughed, remembering Achan’s old infantry song.
“Yet nothing can compare to the infantry…” he finished. Achan shrugged his shoulders slowly and chuckled.
“Tell me, what infantry are you referring to, James?”
“Not a one, my friend,” James laughed. “I see you’re taking this well.”
“Why be worried over something that doesn’t exist?”
“True,” James chuckled.
“Still, I can’t seem to shake the words of that song out of my head…one swing huh? I mean, I guess it’s possible. It feels like I could, but what I’m really not sure about is what would happen if it clashed with another eidolon.”
James was already calling his eidolon forth.
“We could find out,” James said mischievously. “Do an experiment. This is an Academy after all …”
“But what of Arimus’s words?” Achan gasped.
“I’ll simply say I followed your lead.”
“Oh, that’s cruel.”
“You do have seniority over me, Sage.”
“You speak the truth well…Sage.”
Achan leaped toward James as their eidolons clashed, a sparring between friends unlike anything the world had ever seen.
Regardless of what they had been through, regardless of what they felt toward the princess, regardless of the turmoil and agony they would face in only a few short months, at that moment, they cast all worry to the wind and enjoyed life.
Simply two boys, playing with their toys…
