However, the biggest part of her pride had been the fact that she had orchestrated the whole crime and conviction. What choice had she had? The fact remained that whilst forty years ago when she had married the happy go lucky Larry Lewis, she had been a beautiful woman herself. A spunky youthful writer with a keen journalistic nature, and a pushy cheeky side that had infatuated the nightclub owner. She hadn't realised when they had first met that he was the owner, assuming he was just another bar worker as he had served her her babycham. How was she to know he was THAT Larry Lewis. However, when she did, she was determined to marry him. Larry was attractive enough, but his appeal had certainly come from his status. Knowing that he was the son of the multi-millionaire crisp tycoon, Albert Lewis, creator of Bertie's crisps.
Larry hadn't wanted to play his part in the crisp business, leaving his older sister Cheryl to learn the trade from their father. Instead, he had asked his father if he could buy him his first nightclub. Albert had been hesitant at first, thinking his young son Larry was wasting the business and finance degree that he had invested so much money in. However, when Larry had provided his business model, the subject of his whole dissertation, Albert couldn't help but be impressed. And Bar Bertie was born, the name a subtle nod to the family business that had made the venture possible.
Of course, Larry had made the nightclub a magnificent success with chains in most of the major cities within the first twenty years. An achievement which had been supported and encouraged by Barbara. She had used her writing skills to support the business, to find ways to spin any story to Bar Bertie's advantage.
The first twenty years of their marriage had become more and more wonderful, they became wealthier and wealthier which fuelled Barbara's desires for expensive cruises and designer clothes. As she began to get older, and her looks began to fade, this desire moved towards 'getting work done' in a vain attempt to keep her husband's affections by trying to keep as youthful as possible.
However, now at just over sixty, she knew she was a washed-up old hag. Her attempts to try and remain young had brandished her as 'mutton dressed as lamb' and she had become a laughing stock amongst the journalism crowd in Cardiff. Worse still, she could no longer compete with the young beautiful women that her husband insisted on employing. Her husband now acting more like the likes of Hugh Hefner and Peter Stringfellow, using his considerable wealth to lure attractive young girls into lurid affairs.
But this one was different. This one he had fallen in love with. This one had threatened to wreck her whole social status. Yes, she knew she would become a very wealthy woman if she divorced him, but her whole identity was intrinsically linked to being Mrs Larry Lewis. And she wasn't going to let the bastard take that away from her.
So, it was a good thing that she had sufficient dirt on him, enough material into blackmailing her philandering husband into tricking his lover, to get her out of the picture. It was a simple ultimatum, if he didn't set her up then she would go to the police and it would be Larry that would do the time. The bitch was going to prison, or he was, it was up to him to choose. Larry had always been a spineless arsehole; he had chosen wisely.
