Herd is the Word Page 18

by Jenna Lynn Badger

Prince Albert stood stunned. Was Kurt ok? Should the alpacas raise the alarm?

The one he didn’t know continued approaching the stumbling Kurt, who only stepped back.

Kurt reached out a hand, but Prince Albert couldn’t tell if he was trying to touch the other human or if he was trying to stop them.

A squeak left Prince Albert’s mouth.

But no one seemed to notice.

  The newcomer shoved Kurt hard.

Kurt stumbled back. He fell and made a bad sound.

But the one with the white fur didn’t see Kurt fall. They turned and stormed past and out the door, not even noticing the alpaca hovering in the shadows. Prince Albert didn’t have time to think about the one that was leaving. He was worried about his friend.

Prince Albert trotted over to Kurt and nudged him.

Kurt didn’t move, and a worse smell came from him. This one was very bad.

It reminded Prince Albert of the scent the coyotes made when they attacked. A shudder ran through him, and he nudged Kurt again.

  Nothing.

Prince Albert raised his head to look at the ceiling that blocked out the sky and screamed, trying to wake Kurt from his nap. He could hear his females squeaking and looking for the danger outside.

  Still, Kurt did not move.

Worried about his human friend, Prince Albert did the only thing he could do. He ran to find help.

  Acknowledgments

I have to thank all of my readers. Your interest in my writing brings a smile to my face and a determination to keep going.

A big thank you goes to my Beta Reader Crew. Sandy Fields, Mary Nickell, Carol K., and Eeyore aka Paula, Founder of Female Veteran Network™. These four brave individuals provided invaluable feedback during a critical time in the book’s development.

Thank you so much to Gary Jonas, whose clarity helped the story immensely and Tom Hansen who was by my side from start to finish. The book would not be where it is today without their help.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank my copy editor, Rebecca Hodgkins, who was quick and thorough and fun to work with; and my cover artist, Megan Badger, who captures my scatterbrained ideas and produces something better than what I imagined.

Thanks to anyone who left a review and helped others find this book. I appreciate it more than I can say.

  Prince Albert honks his approval!

  About Jenna Lynn Badger

Jenna Lynn Badger is the author of Camping Capers Cozy Mysteries, a series of stories featuring furry animals, campgrounds, RV’s, and a varied cast of interesting characters.

Headstrong animals with big personalities and scenes with quirky but endearing characters are her favorite.

She is a mother of four. She shares her home with one remaining teenager, her author husband, and two cats: Perl and Mr. Bitey.

She enjoys cooking and baking but is constantly struggling to keep food in the fridge. The teenager eats everything, and when the college kids arrive, it’s even worse! But it is fun to have them home.

In her spare time, she sews and crochets, usually while listening to audiobooks, her favorite way to read.

She loves to hike and spend time in nature. Last summer she rented a 30-foot travel trailer and went on a 5000 mile adventure with her family. She hopes to do more traveling, especially in an RV once she’s an empty-nester.
