Darek’s skin crawled. Bay had fucked Hannah, and that was why she hated him so much. He hadn’t been able to figure out her distaste for him until then. “As much as she hated you, you must have really been horrible in the sack.”

“I see you still have jokes, but I’ll leave you with some words that I was kind enough to share with our friend Logan. Nothing nor anyone gets past me. I have eyes and ears everywhere. If he thinks of opening his mouth to breathe another word of what happened back at Camp, I’ll make sure those words are his last.”

“I think he’s learned his lesson. Besides, he has a point; this killer won’t stop until it’s taken something from each of us. Our lives, our freedoms, the people we care about. Tell me, Bay, what do you think this person is going to take from you?”

“Taking anything won’t bother me, and there is nothing and no one I care that much about. I guess they’ll have to kill me. If I don’t get to them first.” He seemed unfazed by the idea that someone could hurt him, but Darek knew better. Everyone had a weakness, and when the killer came for Bay, they would wound him just as badly.

“You waiting on your partner?” Bay looked up toward the doors.

Darek nodded. “Yes, I’m hoping she isn’t much longer. We have a lot of work to do.” He didn’t want to tell him what they were up to.

“I know where you’re going today. Even though you haven’t bothered telling me. Again. All I have to say to you is good luck in Virginia, and make sure that you’re not the one leading. Make her work for it.”

“I’m sure it will be fine.”

“I’m sure it better be.” With that, he walked away, and Darek growled, wishing he could lock him up and throw away the key.

He sat there thinking of all the shit that had happened with Logan and Lidia, and he couldn’t help but feel responsible. He’d gotten an early warning about the killer’s next move, and he had kept it to himself until it was too late. Sure, he hadn’t deliberately meant for anything to happen to either one of them. He assumed that Logan would mention if he had gotten any kind of threats, but when he hadn’t, Darek assumed the killer was going to wait a while before striking again. He and Bay both had underestimated the killer, and now, Tad was dead, and Logan was locked up after a string of casualties.

He looked down into his bag and picked up the burner phone. He turned it on and took a peek, hoping that the killer had responded to his last message, but there was nothing on the screen, which he was becoming obsessed with.

Lizzy walked out and crossed the courtyard. “I’m so sorry. That took way longer than expected, but now we’ve got a place to stay once we’re in Virginia.”

“You booked us each a room? Awesome.”

“Well, about that. There was only one room. It seems there is some kind of conference in that area, and there aren’t many rooms. It was either stay in separate hotels or take the last double.”

“Oh.” His pulse quickened, and she gave him an apologetic look. “I know it’s weird after what happened, but we’re going for work. So, we’ll just have to make sure we stay sober and act professionally.”

“Right.” Darek grabbed his bags and stood up.

“I can handle it. Can you, Detective?” She gave him a sly smile, and he grinned back at her.

“I can handle it, and you won’t hear me complain. It’s not like you’re the worse roommate a man could have.” He knew this would make things interesting on their trip, and with any luck, they’d get to fool around a little more or fuck with the lights out. He wasn’t giving up on her.

They walked to her car, and he tossed his bags into the back seat. Then she gave him the keys. “Will you drive?”

Darek hadn’t planned on driving them this time. He’d hoped she’d gotten better sleep than usual, but she gave a yawn, and he sighed and took the keys. “Fine, but you’re not napping. I need you to keep me awake.”

  “It’s a deal.”

He climbed in behind the wheel, and she walked around to the passenger seat where she buckled herself in.

“How many stops are we making?” Darek was curious what was on her agenda. He remembered what Reed had said about her home, and he wondered if she wanted to see it on the way over or on the way back.

“I’d like to stop off in Maryland if you don’t mind.” She turned and met his eyes with a smile.

  “Sounds good.”

“Yeah, and then from there, we’ll head straight to Camp Victory. I’ve called ahead, and they are expecting us.”

Darek’s heart raced. He wasn’t sure if he wanted the trip to jog his memory, or if he was content to stay blocked. Either way, he was about to face his past.
