  Herveaux, Alcide (wolf): A partner with his father in Herveaux and Son, AAA Accurate Surveys, Alcide, like most shifters, doesn’t want to become involved in vampire affairs; but when the Shreveport vamps call in a marker on his father’s gambling debts that would destroy their company, he must agree to escort Sookie to Jackson in her search for a missing Bill. He is attracted to Sookie and she to him, but just as she is sorting through her feelings of betrayal with Bill, he is sorting through his own feelings about his ex-girlfriend, Debbie Pelt. Although Alcide claims he is determined to rid himself of Debbie, he is willfully blind when it comes to her faults, even Debbie’s vicious act of pushing Sookie into the trunk of a car with a starving Bill. And when Debbie lies and tells him later that Sookie and Bill have reconciled, he believes her and resumes their relationship.

  He is finally forced to face reality when Bill confirms that not only did Debbie lock Sookie and him together in the trunk, but she also participated in his torture at Russell’s mansion. Alcide abjures Debbie in an irrevocable ritual.

  Alcide contacts Sookie again after the death of packmaster Colonel Flood, asking her to attend the funeral as a friend of the pack. He uses her presence to imply her unspoken support for his father as Colonel Flood’s successor. He also wants her to read the other candidate’s mind. He rationalizes that Sookie might think she owes him, as he has realized that she killed Debbie. Although he claims he doesn’t care, Sookie is hurt and angered by his actions and asks him to stay away.

  Alcide rushes to Sookie when her kitchen burns. He asks her to move in with him to explore their relationship, but Sookie questions whether he is fully recovered from Debbie and whether he can forgive her for Debbie’s death. Alcide turns from Sookie into the arms of Were Maria-Star Cooper after his father dies during the packmaster contest with Patrick Furnan. The Were pack remains splintered by the cheating during the contest and the outcome, with Alcide heading the anti-Furnan faction.

  When Maria-Star is murdered, Alcide first suspects Furnan but soon discovers that Patrick’s wife is missing as well. At an arranged parley, the two are attacked by a band of Weres led by Priscilla Hebert, who wants the Long Tooth pack’s territory. The Long Tooth pack unites to take down the interlopers, and when Patrick is killed, Alcide ascends to packmaster. As such, he continues viewing Sookie as a friend of the pack, and they tentatively establish a friendship. He sends Tray Dawson to guard her when she is threatened by the fae.

  Alcide contacts Sookie and Bill to ask if the Long Tooth pack can run on their land at the full moon, as there is a party of human campers on the Herveaux land. Unbeknownst to him, his childhood friend, Hamilton Bond, has conspired to kill his newly appointed second, Basim al Saud, out of jealousy for not being named to the position, foolishly becoming involved with fairy Colman’s plan to get Sookie in trouble with the law. Ham buries Basim’s body on Sookie’s land, but the body is scented by a vampire tracker sent by Eric to check the woods for intruders. Alcide; his new girlfriend, Annabelle; and pack member Jannalynn Hopper arrive to investigate. Along with Ocella, Alexei, Eric, Sookie, and Jason, they dig up the body, and Annabelle is forced to admit that she was having an affair with Basim, but she denies any involvement in his death.

  The pack holds a meeting at Alcide’s house, with Sookie and Jason sitting in. When they arrive, Alcide asks Sookie to act as a shaman, giving her a potion that will help her see the truth among the Weres. She identifies Ham as the culprit and new pack member Patricia Crimmins, one of the few survivors of Hebert’s pack, as his partner-in-crime. Alcide spares Annabelle, but Sookie leaves the meeting knowing that Jannalynn, his newly appointed second, will successfully campaign for the deaths of Ham and Patricia.

  When Alcide hears from Amelia that Sookie has broken the blood bond with Eric, he goes to Sookie’s house to wait for her in her bed. He winds up falling asleep because Sookie spends the night with Eric, but Alcide expresses his desire to have a chance with her when she wakes him in the morning. He reassures her of his genuine interest when she implies that he wants her because the pack needs a shaman, but he becomes upset and leaves when she tells him she doesn’t like the way he has changed since becoming packmaster.   Herveaux, Jackson (wolf): Alcide’s father, a self-made man who owns a successful surveying business, begins to gamble too much after his wife’s death, paving the way for the vampires who hold his markers to exact a favor from Alcide. When Colonel Flood is killed in an accident, Jackson decides to run for packmaster, but his opponent, Patrick Furnan, uses Jackson’s gambling problems to suggest that he would be unsuitable as a leader. Jackson is having an affair with Connie Babcock, his secretary. When he escorts Christine Larrabee to Colonel Flood’s funeral instead of her, Furnan persuades a scorned Connie to steal personal papers from Jackson’s office in an attempt to get more dirt. Connie is caught and arrested, but the damage is done. Furnan continues to spread the word that Jackson cannot handle his own life, let alone the pack. During the packmaster contest, Jackson is declared the winner of the first two tests when Furnan is caught cheating, but the pack, torn by concerns over Jackson’s personal life, votes to allow the third challenge, calling for a decisive win in battle.   Herveaux and Son, AAA Accurate Surveys: A bi-state survey company owned and operated by Jackson and Alcide Herveaux, the business has offices in Jackson, Mississippi, and in Monroe, Shreveport, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Their main office is in Shreveport, where they own the building housing the company headquarters, and they also keep an apartment in Jackson.   Hesterman, Brenda: Brenda and her business partner, Donald Callaway, own Splendide in Shreveport. They buy, sell, and appraise antiques. She and Donald travel to Sookie’s house to appraise the items brought down from the attic, purchasing several pieces for resale in their shop. (DR)

  Hob, Mr. (goblin): No first name given. The doorman and bouncer at Josephine’s, short and cranky Mr. Hob guards the entry to the club and maintains strict order inside. Although his full ability is not known, he easily lifts a biker who violates the rules off the floor and causes the man’s flesh to start burning as he carries him out. (CD)

  Hondo (unspecified shifter): No last name given. One of the paramedics working the summit in Rhodes to care for any injuries to the attending supes. He takes care of Quinn after the weretiger is hit by the arrow thrown by Kyle Perkins. (ATD)

  Hooligans: Hooligans is a strip club co-owned by fairy twins Claude and Claudine. The twins took possession of the club as partial payment when their triplet, Claudette, also a stripper, was murdered by the previous owner. A small club with a fair-sized parking lot, it boasts electric-blue siding and a shocking-pink neon sign. Claude manages the club and also strips on ladies’ night. After Niall closes the door to Faery, Hooligans becomes a meeting place for exiled fae. (DR; mentioned FD, DAAD, DD, FDTW, DAG, DITF)

  Hopper, Ellie: Like many teenagers, Ellie and seventeen-year-old Quinn make out in the backseat of his father’s car. (Mentioned DD)

  Hopper, Jannalynn (wolf): Young Jannalynn is loyal, ruthless, and a flashy dresser. Given the task of executing the fallen enemies after the Were war, she does so with a savage efficiency. Upon the death of Amanda Whatley in that war, ownership of her bar passes to Alcide, who appoints Jannalynn manager despite her youth. He further demonstrates his faith in her by naming her his second after the death of Basim al Saud. Alcide’s faith in her is repaid by her absolute devotion to him. When Hamilton Bond and Patricia Crimmins admit to the murder of Basim, Jannalynn convinces Alcide that the punishment for their betrayal should be death. Even though she is a full Were, Jannalynn is “into lions” and calls Sam for a date after the battle. Although Sam seems to be
enjoying their blossoming relationship, he feels that Jannalynn is not exactly a girl one takes home to meet Mom, so having already asked Sookie to accompany him to his brother’s wedding, he takes her as his date instead of his new girlfriend. Jannalynn is hurt and resentful, and shows up anyway. They plan a date to discuss their relationship and decide to keep seeing each other. Jannalynn is at Merlotte’s to see Sam when the four thugs hired by Sandra Pelt attack, and she throws herself into the fight, easily breaking bones to disable her target. Still brooding over Sookie’s presence in Sam’s life, Jannalynn encourages Alcide Herveaux, her packmaster, to steal into Sookie’s bed and perhaps steal her heart after Sookie breaks the blood bond with Eric.

  When Jannalynn and Sam are forced at gunpoint to take Sandra Pelt to Sookie’s house, an infuriated Jannalynn sees her chance to attack Sandra when Sookie fires at her from the woods. Jannalynn finally manages to break Sandra’s neck, then crushes her skull to finish the job. She is impressed that Sookie has a fairy portal in her woods, and watches curiously as Sam and Sookie force Sandra’s body through the portal. (DD, FDTW, DITF, STW, DR)

  Horowitz, Barry (telepath): Barry is an undisciplined telepath working as a bellboy at the Silent Shore vampire hotel in Dallas when he meets a fellow telepath for the first time. Sookie is able to send Barry a message when she is captured by the Fellowship of the Sun, giving him her location so he can notify Bill and Eric. His actions bring him to the attention of Stan Davis, who shortly becomes the King of Texas and hires Barry as a permanent part of his entourage. He is much more in control of his abilities when he sees Sookie again at the summit in Rhodes, and after the explosion, they work together to locate survivors in the wreckage.   Hot Rain (vampire): Long Shadow’s sire and grand-sire to Charles Twining, he is unhappy with the penalty levied at Eric for Long Shadow’s death and seeks revenge by having Charles kill Sookie. (Mentioned DAAD)

  Hotshot: Located on a crossroads about ten miles southeast of Bon Temps, Hotshot is an isolated little community, the home of a werepanther pack consisting mainly of the multigenerational Norris and Hart families. Therefore, its residents tend to have one of two basic heritages: stocky and fair with green-gold eyes, or small and dark with dark eyes. They keep to themselves and do for themselves, taking care of one another and seeing to their own justice. The roads leading into the community are not well maintained, there are no streetlights, and the people are secretive. Outsiders rarely venture into Hotshot.

  Within the pack, they are all family. They take responsibility for one another. They work as a community to ensure that needs are met. They share the raising of children, considered precious in this small pack. Each member is expected to add to the pack, often more than once, which requires multiple partners, as only the first child of any full-blooded shifter pair is a full-blooded shifter. Though the panthers are not incestuous, they are inbred.

  Calvin Norris, a man well respected both inside and outside the pack, is the leader of Hotshot. He does not hold this position lightly and can be ruthless when enforcing pack laws or meting out justice. When Felton Norris kidnaps Jason Stackhouse, holding him in a metal shed and repeatedly biting him to turn him into a panther, Calvin makes certain Felton pays the ultimate price in exchange for Jason and Sookie not going to the police. Needless to say, death certificates are not always filed when pack members pass away and are quietly buried behind the Tabernacle Holiness Church, where Calvin’s uncle Marvin Norris is the pastor. And, in the past, the need for secrecy has sometimes overwhelmed all else: Sheriff John Dowdy disappeared while serving a warrant in Hotshot, never to be seen again.

  Calvin does not bring the pack out publicly when the shifters announce their presence during the Great Reveal, preferring to allow his panthers to choose when and to whom to disclose their second nature. But Sheriff Bud Dearborn’s careful and caring handling of a grief-stricken Calvin after the death of Crystal Norris Stackhouse indicates that the secrets of Hotshot have been known for some time to at least a few. She is among the select vamps Eric calls to Fangtasia for the attack on Victor, and she does her part by first emasculating and then staking the new bartender, Jock, a former employee of Victor who’s still loyal to his old boss.   Isaiah (vampire): No last name given. King of Kentucky Isaiah finds a Fellowship of the Sun spy in his retinue. Based on information tortured out of her, he is convinced the Fellowship of the Sun will attack the summit. He hires Britlingens as bodyguards. While at the summit, he attempts to court Sophie-Anne and is chosen to preside over her trial for the death of Peter Threadgill. He survives the disaster thanks to the Britlingens. (ATD)

  Ives, Harlen (vampire): Harlen is traveling from Minnesota to New Orleans when he stops in Bon Temps for a visit with Bill and then heads to Monroe to spend some time with Diane, Liam, and Malcolm. He perishes with them when their house is set on fire by an angry mob. (Dies DUD)

  Jacky (panther): No last name given. Crystal’s oldest first cousin, teenager Jacky participates in the Hotshot justice meted out to Mel Hart for his part in Crystal’s death. (DAG)

  Jada: No last name given. Jada is a new girl working at Merlotte’s who, in Arlene’s opinion, is better than Danielle. (DAAD)

  Jade Flower (vampire): No last name given. As Peter Threadgill’s loyal second, Jade Flower does everything within her power to ensure his triumph in his plan to dethrone his queen, including draining E(E)E employee Jake Purifoy in Hadley’s courtyard in an attempt to discredit the queen’s former lover, and tracking Mr. Cataliades’s niece Gladiola to Bon Temps to kill her before she can deliver a message to Sookie.

  During the melee at the queen’s spring ball, Jade Flower must defend herself against Mr. Cataliades, who has discovered that she murdered his niece. By the time she is able to attack Sookie, whom she holds responsible for Peter’s downfall, she is mysteriously missing one leg. She is beheaded by Bill as he comes to Sookie’s aid. (Dies DD)

Left to both children after their deaths, it sat vacant until Jason moved in alone, eventually gaining sole ownership after Gran’s death, when Sookie inherited her house. Jason’s house is well maintained and currently painted a buff color with bright white trim. Although the house is visible from the road, the property extends several acres behind it. A branch off of the circular driveway in the front leads to a porte cochere in the rear, and the ground slopes down from the back deck to a pond with a small pier. A makeshift shooting range in the yard is oriented so that shooters aim into the woods. Inside, the one bathroom has been fully renovated, and there is a kitchen, a small dining room, a living room, a

  Jessup, Bob (witch): Bob is one of the three witches Amelia hires to do the ectoplasmic reconstruction at Hadley’s apartment with her. Although he looks somewhat like a Mormon missionary, Bob is actually a hairdresser with a sardonic, intellectual sexiness that catches Amelia’s attention. They indulge in a night of sex afterward, rousing the next afternoon in time to alert the queen’s headquarters that Sookie and Quinn have been kidnapped. Bob stays with Amelia again the night of the queen’s reception, and their play takes an unexpected downturn when Amelia mistakenly transforms him into a cat. When Amelia moves to Bon Temps, Bob lives as a cat with Sookie and Amelia until Amelia’s mentor, Octavia Fant, is able to transform him back to human. While in feline form, he misses the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, and upon his return to human form, he leaves almost immediately to reestablish contact with his family and friends.
