I nodded quietly and listened to my steady breath. He was right. I’ve carried a heavy burden in my heart for so long. I never did find him in the cemetery. I would never go back to that place that holds him in the ground. It is a spot where people go to say goodbye, and I was not ready for that. For you see, Aaron was everywhere. I held him in my heart. He was in the laughter, he was in the fresh powder of snow on the first run of the season; he was everywhere.
I nodded quietly and broke my silence. “Can I read you what I was going to say?”
Aaron grew thoughtful. “Of course.”
“I found a poem by Helen Lowrie Marshall. I thought of you.” I cleared my throat and continued.
“I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun; of happy memories when life is done.”
Aaron smiled. “It’s perfect.” He stepped forward to give Ace a pat. “Now go, Em. Don’t take any day for granted, especially with mom. Go, live.”
I snapped out of my memory and clucked to Ace. With the sweet scent of spring heavy in my lungs, I pressed my heels into Ace’s sides and leaned forward. “Let ‘er fly boy.” And so, we did.
Life is but a fleeting ride. Embrace the journey; remember the goodbyes. They make the hellos all that more precious.
