Kingdom of Ash and Soot Page 31

by C. S. Johnson

I’ve been wondering about freedom and liberty myself lately, and what it means for growing up. Is there such a thing as true freedom? I am continually dependent on air and food, and even coffee, no matter what my doctor tells me not to consume. I’ve found, after all my “philosophical reflection,” which is what my one professor in college referred to it as, that there is freedom, and it is real, but it is not something we can see as we might see an object. It is an idea, and it is something that my life will spell out for others through my actions and reactions, unbound by time and unguided by circumstance.

What that means more practically, really, is that I’ll write stories about it. And that is, for me, proof of my own freedom. I know it does not come free. Writing these stories provides me an outlet of freedom, but it still takes time and effort from others in order to come to life. And that is the great lesson for me in all this. Trust, love, and freedom are all interdependent on each other. That is why I must thank all of the people who have dedicated such care to my work, including my (Almost) Famous Readers, my “book doctor” team, and my family.

Ultimately, true freedom has always been found in Christ. We are shown the Truth, and the Truth has set us free. We are able to recognize our chains for what they are—our inner fears, the power struggles around us, the individual forces, both natural and spiritual, interacting around us—and we are, through that recognition, able to choose the right ways to struggle for our freedom. We can, like Ella, choose to be brave, to be kind, and to be determined to fight for what we love.

I hope you have enjoyed your introduction into Eleanora’s life, and all the complicated quests and inquiries that it has presented. Please look for the next book in this trilogy, Prince of Secrets and Shadows, where Ella must face the reality that truth has shown her—despite all the pain it brings.
