Being able to focus consciously, solving problems effectively and having improved memory.
This is when the fight-or-flight response activates, which is crucial in dangerous situations.
Improvement in alertness, reasoning, logic, concentration and critical thinking.
If you have too few of these brain waves, this causes ADHD, depression, daydreaming and poor cognition. Conversely, if you have too much of these brain waves, this may lead to anxiety, an inability to relax, too much adrenaline, high arousal and stress.
● Gamma waves (from 38.0 to 42.0 Hz)
These brain waves are the fastest ones, and they're associated with simultaneous information processing from the different parts of the brain. Gamma brain waves transmit information in a quiet but quick way. They're the most subtle brain waves, so you need to quiet your mind if you want to access them.
In the past, researchers dismissed gamma brain waves as "spare brain noise." That is, until they found out that these waves were highly active in people who were in states of altruism, universal love and other "higher virtues." These brain waves also occur above the neuronal firing frequency, so experts aren't really sure how they are generated. According to speculation, the rhythms of gamma brain waves modulate consciousness and perception. Here are the benefits of gamma brain waves:
They improve information processing, REM sleep, perception, learning, cognition and the senses.
Being compassionate and having a higher intelligence level.
Being able to control one's self more effectively.
Increased awareness through the senses and experiencing natural happiness more.
If you have too few of these brain waves, this causes ADHD, learning disabilities and depression. Conversely, if you have too much of these brain waves, this may lead to anxiety, stress and high arousal.
You cannot separate your daily experiences from your brainwave profile. When your brain waves aren't in perfect balance, you will start experiencing problems in your neuro-physical or emotional health.
Evidence Showing How Binaural Beats or Brainwave Entrainment Help Neuroplasticity
A good amount of research has been done about binaural beats and brainwave entrainment, and how they help neuroplasticity. For instance, in one study, researchers found that when a person listens to binaural beats for a certain amount of time, there is a change in their arousal levels (Padmanabhan, Hildreth & Laws, A prospective, randomised, controlled study examining binaural beat audio and preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing general anaesthesia for day case surgery, 2005). They believe that binaural beats stimulate specific systems of the brain, which causes these changes.
In another small study, the results showed that the use of binaural beats in the alpha, delta and theta patterns cause a positive impact on the body (Giampapa, Binaural Beats Therapy Stimulates Long Life & Wellbeing Hormones, n.d.). These beats promote the production of DHEA, cortisol and melatonin, three types of hormones.
The use of binaural beats can also promote a decrease in insulin-like growth factor, dopamine and anxiety, as shown by a study conducted in Oregon's National College of Natural Medicine (Wahbeh, Calabrese & Zwickey, Binaural beat technology in humans: a pilot study to assess psychologic and physiologic effects, 2007). The participants of this study also experienced an improvement in their quality of life. The researchers concluded that binaural beats may help in the improvement of self-reported anxiety.
All of these studies and more show how binaural beats can help cause changes in the brain. Since brainwave entrainment works with basically the same core principle as binaural beats, the results of these studies may also apply. Of course, more studies are being conducted, and are needed to provide more evidence on how binaural beats or brainwave entrainment may help with neuroplasticity. One thing's for sure: They are highly effective, which is why more and more people are starting to get interested in them.
The Benefits of Brainwave Entrainment or Binaural Beats
As we have already learned, brainwave entrainment and binaural beats are powerful methods of utilizing sounds to alter the state of the brain. Since the brain operates at various wavelengths, you can make adjustments to them depending on what aspect you want to improve. Take a look at these benefits:
● Increased creativity
This comes from beta waves. When you awaken up from a deep sleep or when you try to break through the lull you feel every afternoon, beta brain waves can help increase your creativity and bring you into a heightened state of alertness.
● Stress relief
This comes from alpha waves. When you find your mind racing at the end of the day because you experienced a lot of stress, alpha brain waves can help generate a state of relaxation by calming your mind.
● Improved learning
This comes from theta waves. When you want to learn new things, the ideal frequency is theta. However, you can't really learn while you're asleep! So you can use brain entrainment to tune in your brain to the theta state while you're awake to improve your memory and learning.
● Rejuvenating rest
This comes from delta waves. When you use these waves, you can fall asleep more easily, and they can even improve your sleep quality. Then, when you wake up, you feel a lot more rested.
● Anxiety reduction
One of the more popular programs of brainwave entrainment is known as "holosync," since it's highly effective for the reduction of anxiety. Through this, you can suppress your negative thoughts and open your mind to more positive thinking.
● Pressure relief
Brainwave entrainment can also help relieve pressure, especially when you use it to induce brain waves to move into the alpha state rather than the beta state. This, in turn, reduces the source of pressure that come from beta waves.
● Improved ingenuity
You can also use brainwave entrainment to excite your brain waves from beta states (where intellectual reasoning occurs) to alpha states (which help improve visualization and ingenuity).
● Easier meditation
You will also find it easier to meditate when you use brainwave entrainment. This helps induce the required brain waves so that you can achieve a meditative state more easily.
