Heartbreaker Page 16

by Romy Lockhart

Donnie groans on the carpet, hugging himself. She stills, her gaze hard.

“I knew I’d find him here. He’s a spineless fucking worm.”

“And yet, you’re willing to kill for him,” Nick snaps.

“Oh what would you know?” She scowls.

I let go of Nick’s hand and take a step toward her. She’s close enough to touch now, and that’s all I need to do to get her to drop the gun. Nick touches my arm as I touch her. I know instinctively he can see everything I see when I look into her.

“Put the gun down,” I demand, feeling so much better once she drops it.

She’s hiding unchecked mental illnesses, things she needs medication to handle. I can only do so much for her with my touch. She’s going to need the help of medical professionals to really get through this. I breathe out a sigh.

“You’ll go straight to a doctor and confess you’re having homicidal urges.”

“We’re not going to hand her over to the cops?” Nick asks quietly.

I pause. It’s hard to know the right thing to do here, but I don’t think shopping her in is it.

“What if she tries this again, with someone else?”

His second question stalls me entirely. He has a real point.

Movement catches my eye on the ground. Donnie is getting to his feet. He groans a little as he moves. His words don’t make sense the moment he speaks them.

“Don’t worry, she won’t do this again.”

“She won’t?” I ask, as the girl falls out of my grasp, landing on the floor with a thud.

I blink, looking down at her bleeding face and not understanding. It takes seeing Nick yank the gun out of Donnie’s hand to make me realise what just happened. The sound of the shot only seems to register afterwards, as if it happened in slow motion.

  “Donnie, no.”

He falls to his knees as the door opens. Logan looks in on us and curses, rushing to the girl’s side.

“She’s alive,” he says, bringing his phone out to call the emergency services.

The next hour passes in a blur. I find out later that The Hellcats did their set while the ambulance took Dina away and the cops questioned Donnie and let him go. Then I’m being asked if I think I can perform. I’m shaken, but I nod.

“Are you sure, Eden?” Logan is worried about me. It’s so sweet.

“The show must go on,” I tell him, shrugging. The girl didn’t die. Donnie wasn’t arrested. Nick and Logan are safe. The police have taken the gun away. I just need to shake this whole incident off and step into the spotlight.

Logan and Nick hug me for a long moment before I have to get moving. Donnie doesn’t say a word as we head onto the stage. Everything feels a little strange, but it’s not long before the performance takes me over and the world feels right again. I know then and there that it doesn’t matter what happens. I’m always going to be okay.

  Chapter Forty-Five

  Eden

Endings are always kind of sad, even when they mean moving on to better things. The tour was an incredible rush that lasted six months and was full of surprises. I loved every minute, but I’m looking forward to some downtime with my guys now.

If only I didn’t manage to get sick on the last leg. My stomach’s been weird for a week or so. I’d hoped it would be better by now, but apparently not.

Nick lets me out of the car at our place in Rapture and I have to wait a sec before I step out.

“Hey, you look kind of pale,” he tells me, helping me out and closing the door.

“I think the flu I had is still lingering,” I tell him, kind of miserable that it’s going to keep me from getting close to them all. It’s been weeks since I laid eyes on Asher and Eli. I don’t want to have to be quarantined from them.

Nick trades a look with Logan as we head into the house. Neither of them say a word.

We go inside and Asher walks straight over to hug me. My head spins a little at his enthusiasm and a wave of nausea rolls over me.

“Take it easy, there, Ash,” Nick scolds him.

I frown as Asher lets me go, his gaze moving over me carefully as if he’s inspecting me.

“Okay, what the heck is going on here? Someone needs to tell me now,” I demand, rubbing at my stomach.

Logan takes my hand and I lock eyes with him as he clears his throat. “Eden, have you ever really been sick before?”

His question throws me. My thoughts swirl around as I try to conjure up a memory to prove I’ve had the flu before. I can’t think of anything. The depression caused by denying my true self is the only true illness I’ve really experienced. “Why? What are you saying?”

“She hasn’t,” Asher says, as if he’s only just realising it. “Remember when Sasha got Chicken Pox, Eden? You had played with her all day and you never caught it.”

Shit. He’s right. “So I have some kind of super immune system, so what? Wait. I’m sick now. Has it stopped working? Fred! Fred, you need to get your ass out here right this minute.”

“Uh, no,” Nick says. “That’s not the point we’re trying to get to here.”

I realise Eli has walked over, still in his sheriff’s uniform. I get a little distracted and he gives me a little half-smile as I realise my guys are surrounding me in the tiny hallway. I feel a little light-headed, and not in a sexy way for once. Damn. What the hell is wrong with me?

  “So what is your point?”

They all glance at each other, as if they’re trying to decide who should tell me what’s going on.

That’s when Cupid appears, behind my guys, wearing those stupid sunglasses and a smirk on his lips. I can’t believe he actually showed up.

“Somebody tell me what’s going on!” I can’t stand it anymore.

“Eden, you’re pregnant,” Asher whispers, making me gasp.

“He’s quite right. It’s highly amusing that they all knew and you didn’t.” Cupid tells me, grinning a little.

“Pregnant?” I can’t be! Wait. I feel the blood rush from my face as I realise I ran out of contraceptives last month and I completely forgot to get more.

“I can find out who the father is, if that’s any concern?” Cupid asks, making me want to slap him.

In fact if he’d been within arm’s reach I would have punched him for saying it.

  “How far along am I?”

He shrugs. “I believe you’re four weeks at this point.”

Four weeks ago. That was the last time all of my guys were with me together. I glance at each of them in turn. “I don’t need to know who got me pregnant.”

The sighs of relief echo my sentiment. It doesn’t matter how this happened. It just matters that we’re all going to be together.

Cupid clears his throat. “Well, if you have no need of me I’ll be leaving now. I do have other Goddesses to guide.”

“Wait!” I call before he can blink out of existence. “Is there anything I need to know? About having a kid who’s going to be a god or goddess, I mean.”

He smiles. “They won’t come into their powers until they’re supposed to. I’m sure you’ll call on me many times while your twins are growing up.”

“Twins?” I ask, raising my eyebrows.

“Twins,” Nick murmurs, sounding as astonished as I feel.

Cupid disappears without another word. I’m left surrounded by my men, completely gobsmacked and feeling just a little sick.

“We should get you off your feet,” Eli says, lifting me when I nod.

He carries me up the stairs to my bedroom, and lays me down in the middle of a huge bed that takes up half the space in the room. Slowly my men surround me on the bed.

“You guys are okay with this?” I’m still pretty shocked about it. I can’t even imagine how they must be feeling.

“It’s fast,” Nick tells me, “but it feels right.”

“I knew you weren’t taking your pills,” Logan admits, his gaze a little downcast.

“Feels like a blessing to me,” El
i says before I can fixate on Logan’s admission.

I gaze at Asher and the smile that reaches his eyes is more than enough to assure me he wants this too. “We’re going to be a family.”

“We are.” All of us. I can hardly wait.

I guess this is my new beginning. I had no idea it was going to feel so good. I mean, once I get over this whole morning sickness thing. That doesn’t last long, right?
