When she got to the edge of town, the mist pressed down in solid white bars. Even the light from the rows of shops couldn't cut through the thick haze. There was a stillness to the streets, a deadness to the air like the quiet before a massive storm.
Fenella pulled into her spot at the police station. Had she parked straight? There was so much fog it was hard to see the white lines. She turned off the wipers, lights, and ignition. She was ready for whatever the day threw her way. The switch had flipped.
A figure appeared from the fog and tapped the car window.
"Inspector Sallow, Superintendent Jeffery would like a word."
The assistant looked through the car window, face damp as though she'd been waiting for some time. The way she stared made the fine hairs on the back of Fenella's neck stand on end. With a slow twist, she let her neck tilt from side to side. She had checked her phone before leaving home. There were no messages. What could have happened during her thirty-minute drive?
"Come on," said the assistant. "The boss is furious."
Fenella got out of the Morris Minor and locked the door. When she looked up, the assistant had vanished into the swirls of white mist.
Fenella had no memory of her walk along the plush hall at the top of the police station. She entered the office with the barest of knocks. Jeffery stood by the side of her desk. Fenella knew then. Jack Croll was right.
"It's Hamilton Perkins," Jeffery said. "Mr Shred. He's escaped from Low Marsh Prison."
