by D. R. Rosier
She was also one of the strongest women he knew.
He nodded, “Of course, we’re allies, and becoming friends?” he paused until she nodded and relaxed slightly, “You’ll always be welcome here, Lori.”
Lori smiled almost shyly, but only for a brief moment before her usual confidence settled on her lovely face.
Cassie said to Emily, “And you leaving doesn’t mean that you’re not a friend or ally anymore. If you want to visit, or need help out there, you know how to contact your high priestess.”
Emily smiled, “Thanks. Hopefully that won’t be necessary, the second part I mean. I’ll definitely keep in touch for the first part, though.”
Sy’lia said, “I have news too. My people and the dragons are willing to open up trade and exchange of knowledge with your people, but there’s a caveat.”
He smirked, this should be good, meaning not good at all, “Let’s hear it.”
Sy’lia said, “They share my concerns of eventual corruption over time, even though you seem to be handling it well with… with the aid of your mates. They’ll only trade with you and trust our people in your hands if you accept a permanent ambassador in your home. To… measure things. I know that sounds untrusting, but I swear if there was ever a time we had to break, we would simply break off relations and leave, unless attacked of course.”
He frowned, “So… I’m stuck with you?”
He’d meant to be teasing, but it’d come our rather plaintively, which made him blush.
She laughed, “You need to work on your diplomacy. For another sixty-four weeks. At least. The term of service is a year, unless I request to stay another. On the good side, the post isn’t just to watch for your inevitable decline into evil,” she said teasingly, “I’ll also be continuing to assist you in the ways I can. It’s not a small thing, the magic of my goddess. Especially if failed crops or some other blight hits while me or another of my people are stationed here.”
Wow, she finally laughed at one of his jokes, and it was a dry and rather cruel one. Elven humor is weird.
“I’ll agree to that, for the sake of my people.”
Sy’lia smirked, “I’ll let them know. They’ll probably be sending four teams, and they’ll leapfrog their way down the coast from up near Seattle to here. So you can let your people know. The trip will take about ten to twelve days by horse, since they can canter the whole way.”
Right, he’d found out the ride had taken three weeks for Katie when they’d had that balance thing out east, but the elves could energize their horses with their peculiar magic.
They finished lunch, and it kind of turned into celebration, even if the war was a mess, and they had a hundred thousand refugees establishing a big ass community in Oregon.
There was also the matter of the goodbyes for the few leaving. To his surprise, after they’d saddled their horses, Emily gave him a sloppy wet goodbye kiss right on the lips. She even slipped him a little tongue with a full body grind thrown in as well. When it was over, and she released him from her goodbye hug, she shook her head in mock sadness.
“Not even a tingle.”
He chuckled, “That makes one of us.”
She winked, “But it was still nice. I’ll miss you.”
She hugged him again, and put her lips to his ear, “Take care of her, would you? She’s the strongest person I’ve ever met, but no one can stand alone. Don’t let her try.”
He nodded, not having to ask who the she was, “I will, so will my mates.”
She smiled, her brown eyes a little misty as she let him go, and then went over and kissed Kim as she hugged the sexy twin hard.
He snickered, and he bet she got a tingle from that goodbye.
Lin plastered herself to his side, ducking under his arm, and let out a contented sigh. She was a perfect fit.
“I love that I can do this now. You have no idea.”
He grinned, “I think I do. I love my hands on you, and the opposite.”
He felt a little conflicted, as Emily, Betty, and Nancy gathered around their horses, and Cassie sent them to the east coast right outside Savannah.
He wasn’t sure what would happen next, but it’d take him a while to get used to his twins sharing his bed, and him having four lovers now. Not to mention a very sexy and annoying elf in the house, and a priestess of shadows that shared more sexual tension with him than he was comfortable with. Especially given her past. He didn’t imagine she’d ever suffer the intimate touch of a man, not for a long time yet, and four mates was already more than he could handle, really.
They’d be starting families soon too. He was sure Cassie would be pregnant any day now that they were trying. He was a life sorcerer after all, and after that sexy as hell confession he didn’t imagine Mara would be holding out in worry too much longer.
No, he wasn’t sure what would happen next. Except, he was almost positive something would come up. The world was full of assholes, and there was always trash to be taken out. Of course, they’d also be able to continue their tour of the flourishing communities, visit each one for a day once a year every third day. That was more about the priestesses than him, but he far more enjoyed that kind of thing than taking out the trash. At least he and Cassie could be a part of making that positive stuff happen, and it wouldn’t hurt to spend one day a year with his various community rulers.
All he knew for sure was they’d face it together, as allies, and family.
Afterword:
I hope you enjoyed the story. This Third return of magic book is the second of three focused mostly on Sean Anders and his Life Sorcerer story, the story of the west coast and all the people in his life. Obviously, there’s a smaller focus on other people as well. The epic storyline may continue with a different lead character if this part of the series goes well. I chose to stick with the overarching name of return of magic and break things down into sub-trilogies and arcs.
If you haven’t read it yet, you might want to pick up the first book, emergence, which starts out Sean’s and Katie’s stories, and how emergence came about in more detail.
If you can, please take the time to leave a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads. Reviews are the lifeblood of independent authors, and they have a bigger impact than you’d believe.
