  “Can we watch Horsefeathers?” I said.

  “I’ll make the popcorn,” Ira said.

  I laced my hands behind my head and looked at the sky for a while. A police helicopter chopped by without stopping to circle the neighborhood. Time to be thankful for the little things.

  I took out my phone. For a full minute I looked at it as if it was some ancient seer stone holding the great answers of life and all I had to do was wait for them.

  Then I got tired of waiting.

  And made the call.
