It was the following day that Fox got a note from the Crown Prosecution Service saying that they agreed with his view that Benson had not been guilty of any crime.

Commander Alec Myers looked up from his paperwork. ‘Ah, Tommy,’ he said. ‘Just the bloke I wanted to see. How did it go?’
‘Harley got fourteen years, sir, and Murchison went down for life, of course. Recommended twenty-five years minimum. Bryce and Meek got a league each.’ Fox grinned. ‘But then they had got a bit of form, guv’nor.’
‘And the woman?’
‘Jane Meadows got two years with twelve months of it suspended.’ Fox sounded quite depressed about that. ‘The judge reckoned that she’d acted under the evil influence of Harley. He mentioned a couple of fingers called Svengali and Trilby. I suppose they’ll come eventually.’
‘What about Ali Barber?’
‘Who, sir?’
‘Ali Barber. The bloke who helped Bryce and Meek to bury Dixon.’
Fox grinned. ‘Oh, him. Threw him back. Don’t want tiddlers.’
‘Good result, all the same, Tommy,’ said Myers.
‘Thank you, sir.’ Fox turned to go.
‘Oh, Tommy.’
‘Yes, sir.’
‘I’ve got DS Crozier’s expenses here. A trip to the South of France. He seems to have been living it up over there, wining and dining. He said you authorised it …’
