Like a dude who was afraid to show his emotions, he rubbed a hand over his face after he pulled away, covering a sniffle with a cough. Still, try as he might, Jesse couldn’t hide his true feelings from me. I knew him better than anyone else, and he knew it too. “Don’t ever leave like that again. Promise me.”
Now it was my turn to be riddled with sadness. “I can’t stay, Jesse. Not for good, but I promise never to leave again without telling you.”
Hurt descended into his stormy eyes, but he blinked it away and held out his hand. “Pinky swear.”
My nose wrinkled and I grinned. “Pinky swear,” I vowed, lifting my pinky to hook around his.
“Are you going to tell us where you’ve been?” Hannah asked, looping an arm around my shoulder.
I chuckled. “I would like to, but I’m warning you, you’re going to think I’m crazy.”
Hannah rolled her eyes. “We already do,” she reminded, the smile on her lips teasing, but after a few seconds, the lightness faded, as did her grin. “We’re not as naive as you might think. We’ve seen... things.”
“Are you okay?” Jesse asked, his gaze flicking to Devyn.
Swallowing, I nodded, my eyes connecting with Devyn’s before turning back to my friends. “It’s okay now.”

We spent hours on my front porch, talking under the stars and catching up on everything that happened during our months apart. I was just as eager to hear about their lives as they were to hear about mine.
To my surprise, they were much more receptive about who I was and where I’d been. Not that they didn't indeed think I was crazy, but once the shock wore off, a million questions came next. As did the requests for demonstrations. I couldn’t resist showing off my abilities just a little, but the full shift with the nine tails would have to wait. I wasn’t ready for that just yet.
It was late when we said goodnight, with a promise that I’d still be there in the morning. I watched them cross the yard, holding hands, and jump back into the Jeep to take Hannah home, and I realized that missing chunk in my heart was finally whole.
I was whole.
Fireflies danced in the front yard as Devyn settled in front of me, lacing his arms around my waist as he dropped his forehead to mine. “You are happy.”
Lifting on my toes, I pressed my lips to his and sighed. “Very.”
His arms drew me tighter against him. “You’re mine, Kitten. In this world. In my world. In the afterworld. In every world.”
I smiled at him unabashedly. “And you’re mine. In every world.”
