“I’m sorry I was away for so long. I was with the council. They’ve decided not to step in. They believe this world isn’t worth saving. It’s now up to you to save this planet. Many in the magic world will band together and help, but the dark forces are strong. It won’t be an easy battle.”
“How can they leave us?” Jayden asked, nearly ready to give up.
“They never thought this world would work, that species from the many universes could come together and co-exist. They’ve been proven right time and time again. I think we can prove them wrong, that good will always prevail, but it won’t be without great pain and loss. You have a long fight ahead of you.”
“That’s it. You came to say nothing more than good luck?” Jayden asked in disbelief.
“I came to tell you how much I love you, and I believe in you.”
“What good does that do us when everyone keeps dying?”
“I’m sorry you feel that way, Jayden, but if you lose your faith in this planet, it will be destroyed. You have to keep fighting.”
“I don’t know what to fight for anymore,” he thundered as he took a step back.
“You fight for us,” Phoenix interjected as she locked eyes with Jayden. “You fight for what we have, and for Sadie and Brian, and my parents. We all fight — because even though it seems the dark forces are taking over, they are weak compared to this — what we have when we’re united.”
She grabbed his hand and light spread between them, the power unmistakable. Maybe she was right. Maybe they could win. He felt the strength flowing between them, arcing out to surround those they loved.
“Don’t give up, Jayden. Phoenix will save us all,” Josiah said as he started to fade.
“Don’t leave without giving us answers,” Jayden demanded, but it was too late. With a sympathetic smile still on his face, Josiah faded, leaving them standing there stunned, and without a plan. They had no clue what was going to happen next.
