“I don’t have much in the way of good luck, do I?” Ruth asked ruefully only for his words to hit her. She blinked tears out of her eyes as she gazed at him. “You really do want to marry me, don’t you?” she breathed, her eyes round with wonder.
“I do,” Elias whispered, pressing another lingering kiss to her lips. “Will you? Will you marry me? I promise that I will do everything in my power to love you and protect you for the rest of our lives.”
“Aren’t you supposed to ask me to marry you after the courtship?”
Elias laughed. “Well, we haven’t done anything else conventionally so far, and you do want a life of adventure. Why should we start being boring now?”
“What will your friends think?” Ruth asked, not really caring what anybody thought.
Elias pressed another kiss to her lips. “They know that I adore you. They will think I am the luckiest man in the world.”
“We are both lucky,” Ruth agreed with a firm nod only to wince when her head started to pound even more.
“For now, I demand that you allow a doctor to check that head of yours, and that you get plenty of rest.”
Ruth looked ruefully at him. “And what will you be doing?” Her heart began to pound when she saw Elias’s roguish grin.
“I will be planning our wedding of course,” Elias laughed. “Come on. Let’s go home. We have a lot of work to do, and a proper courtship to plan of course, and a wedding to organise, an investigation to complete, a house to set up, and guests to look after.”
“Marriage to you is going to be very busy, isn’t it?” Ruth mused, delighted that Elias loved her too.
“Of course,” Elias promised and leaned lovingly closer as he whispered: “It’s an adventure.”
