The Summer Retreat

by Sheila Roberts

Aaron Baumgarten, Mr. Millennial, is a reporter for The Beach Times. As you’ve seen, he likes to stay involved in town matters.

Luna Edwards has lived in Moonlight Harbor for twenty years. She was married when she first hit town and opened Waves Salon. We’ll have to take you there and let you get better acquainted soon. She no longer has the husband but she still has her salon and both of them are going strong.

Susan Frank owns Beach Babes apparel. She’s pushing sixty and her shop caters to... Let’s just say that you won’t see the fashions she carries in any women’s magazine. What else can we say about Susan? Well, every town needs a sourpuss, right? Enough said.

Jonas Greer is really new to town. He’s a firefighter—be still our hearts!—and he’s single. How many hearts he sets on fire before he finds his one true love is anybody’s guess.

Whit Gruber is in his sixties and is Aunt Edie’s accountant. His life is so much easier now that Jenna has turned things around financially for the Driftwood Inn.

Victor King often works as Frank’s partner. He definitely qualifies as one of Moonlight Harbor’s finest. Buff and good-looking, he’s hard on crime but soft on women.

Rian LaShell owns Sandy Claws, the town’s pet supplies shop. She’s still in her thirties, slender and exotic-looking with her taupe-colored hair and cat’s eye-style eyeliner. Rian is single and before Jenna came to town, she dated Brody Green. Is she dating anyone now? Not yet.

KJ and Elizabeth MacDowell are fairly new to town. The sisters started a craft shop in town called Crafty Just Cuz. If you’re the artsy type and you enjoy crafting, you’ll find all the supplies you could ever wish for at their establishment, as well as Saturday workshops on everything from painting tiles to decorating cakes.

Cindy Redmond is much loved. With her reddish hair, round face and busty figure she looks a little like a walking Tootsie Pop. Or maybe people just think that because she’s so sweet. She and her husband, Bruce, own Cindy’s Candies, the best candy shop on the Washington coast.

Rita Rutledge is close to Jenna in age. She owns Books and Beans. She’s divorced and there’s currently no one in her life. Any applicant for her heart had better appreciate a good cup of coffee and a good book.

Sherwood Stern is the president of Harbor First National Bank and master of the regretful smile. He wasn’t much help to Jenna when she was trying to revive the Driftwood. But hey, if you need a loan maybe he’ll be nicer to you.

Frank Stubbs. What can we say about Frank? He’s a good cop but a bit of a doofus. Short and squat, he lives up to his name. He’s always after Jenna to go out with him but deep down, knows that’s a hopeless cause. Maybe someday Frank will find someone who appreciates him. Let’s not hold our breath on that one.

Kiki Strom is a mover and shaker. Her shop, Something Fishy, shaped like a giant shark, is one of the town’s most popular attractions. People looking for souvenirs enter the shop through the shark’s giant mouth. Kiki is in her early seventies and still going strong. She wears her gray hair in spikes and is always stylishly dressed. She doesn’t shop at Beach Babes.

Patricia Whiteside is one of the town’s treasures. Like Jenna’s aunt Edie, she’s lived in Moonlight Harbor for years and, like Aunt Edie, was a pioneer in the town’s hospitality industry. She owns the Oyster Inn, a charming upscale B & B that always does well. Happily for Jenna’s pal, Courtney Moore, she recently added a small boutique to the place’s amenities and you can find many of Courtney’s fashion creations for sale there.

Pastor Paul Welch—you’ve certainly gotten to know him. Who knows what his future holds? You can be sure of one thing: in the future he’s going to be a lot more cautious when it comes to love.

So those are most of the key people in town. Hang around. You’re bound to meet more. Hope you’ll enjoy your time here at the beach as our stories continue to unfold.
