00-07-86 – Promo Video
Press
Taped on 16-06-86, the video sees Paul miming on the tube (London underground train), much to the obvious bemusement of many of the passengers, and was later included on ‘The McCartney Years’. As with all the singles from the ‘Press To Play’ album, ‘Press’ was only moderately successful, reaching No. 25 in the UK and No. 21 in the USA, while the album got to No. 8 in the UK and No. 30 in the USA.

This was broadcast on ‘Wogan’ on 01-08-86, and, as an alternate edit, on ‘McCartney’ on 29-08-86.

Pretty Little Head
Starting with a snippet of ‘She’s Leaving Home’, and then showing a girl running away from home while Paul sings via a giant billboard, it’s a case of ‘nice video, shame about the song’, and it isn’t surprising that this only got to No. 76 in the UK charts. Taped on 18-10-86, the video is on ‘The McCartney Years’.
00-11-86 – Promo Video
Stranglehold
Instead of ‘Pretty Little Head’, the USA had ‘Stranglehold’ as a single, not that it helped as this did even worse than the UK single at No. 81. Taped on 04-11-86, the so-so video features Paul with a band miming in a club.
29-11-86 – ‘The Royal Variety Command Performance’ (UK)
Only Love Remains
Taped on 24-11-86, Paul performs, with a band, a nice version of his new single, not that it helped sales.
00-12-86 – Promo Video
Only Love Remains
Taped on 19-11-86, this features Paul with both band and orchestra in a simple studio set-up. The song is one of Paul’s better songs from this period, and peaked at No. 34 in the UK charts.
12-12-86 – ‘The Tube’ (UK)
Only Love Remains / Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On (excerpt)
For this performance, taped on 11-12-86, Paul is joined by just Linda and Vicki Brown on backing vocals plus a saxophone player.

Seaside Woman
An updated remix of the earlier version, this features Linda singing and super-imposed over the original cartoon.
00-05-87 – Promo Video – FERRY AID
Let It Be
A charity record to aid the Zeebrugge ferry disaster fund, this remake of The Beatles’ classic features Paul with Kate Bush, Boy George, Gary Moore, Mark Knopfler, Edwin Starr and a host of others. While not the greatest version you’ll ever hear, the cause was good, and it topped the UK charts.

Once Upon A Long Ago
A stand-alone single that wasn’t made for any specific album (though it is on ‘All The Best!’), this got to No. 10 in the UK charts, Paul’s biggest hit in 3 years. Taped on 16/17-10-87 outdoors in Plymouth and combined with brief animation, the video, available in 2 similar edits, was shown on ‘Top Of The Pops’ on 03-12-87, and is on ‘The McCartney Years’.
18-11-87 – ‘Yoru No Hit Studio Deluxe’ (Japan)
Once Upon A Long Ago
Taped in the UK for Japanese TV broadcast, this is the first of several TV appearances around the world to promote the new single, something that, after years of doing very little TV, would become far more common practice from now.
20-11-87 – ‘Wogan’ (UK)
Jet / Listen To What The Man Said
Taped the previous day, Paul and band perform, with live vocals, 2 Wings classics to promote the ‘All The Best!’ compilation.
24-11-87 – ‘The Roxy’ (UK)
Once Upon A Long Ago
This performance, set on a school pantomime stage, could be mistaken for an alternate promo video, and in some ways it suits the song better. It was taped on 17-11-87.
27-11-87 – ‘The Last Resort’ (UK)
Don’t Get Around Much Anymore / I Saw Her Standing There / Lawdy Miss Clawdy
Reportedly suffering writers block, Paul cut an album of rock ‘n’ roll classics in 1987, initially as an exclusive album for the Russian market. Eventually released world-wide as ‘CHOBA B CCCP’, it got to No. 63 in the UK and No. 109 in the USA. Here, playing electric guitar and ably backed by the show’s house band Steve Nieve and The Playboys, Paul performs live versions of 2 songs from the album plus a Beatles classic.

My Brave Face
For 1989’s ‘Flowers In The Dirt’ album, Paul made a dramatic return to form, also embracing his Beatles past more than ever, particularly on the jangly, harmony-led, ‘My Brave Face’. Taped on 10/11-04-89, the video too harks back to the past, featuring a vague storyline about a fanatical Japanese Beatles fan, and including Beatles footage. A No. 18 UK and No. 25 US hit, the video was shown on ‘Top Of The Pops’ on 18-05-89, and is also on ‘The McCartney Years’. The ‘Flowers In The Dirt’ album did well, at least in the UK where it topped the charts, though it only reached a disappointing No. 21 in the USA.
18-05-89 – ‘Mensch Meier’ (Germany)
Put It There
This is the first of many TV appearances to promote the new album, with this particular song eventually becoming a single. Featured here are Paul’s new touring band, which, as well as Linda, features Hamish Stuart (guitars and bass), Robbie McIntosh (guitar), Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens (keyboards) and Chris Whitten (drums). This line-up would last until late 1990, and, with just one change, until the end of 1993.

00-07-89 – Promo Video #1
This One
This is one of the few instances when 2, entirely different, videos were made to promote a new single. This 1st version was taped on 23/24-06-89, and features Paul and the band sitting cross-legged in very ‘60s clothing and with painted eyes on their eyelids. All very effective, but Paul wasn’t entirely happy with it, and made a 2nd video… which makes this version’s appearance (only) on ‘The McCartney Years’ all the more odd. The single got to No. 18 in the UK, but stalled at a disastrous No.94 in the USA.
00-07-89 – Promo Video #2
This One
Taped in early July 1989, this 2nd video sees Paul and band wearing bowler hats and filmed in a jerky stop-motion fashion. Impressive enough, but most people would prefer the 1st version.

This One
This was taped on 25-07-89.
24-08-89 – The Lyceum Theatre, New York (USA)

00-11-89 – Promo Video
Ou Est Le Soleil?
An awful song, the video, taped on 14-07-89 and featuring Paul and Linda super-imposed over simple videogame graphics, isn’t much better.

Party Party
This is another lesser song, with a video featuring messy and fast-moving animation.

A rather good acoustic song that was a No. 32 UK hit, this video, taped on 22-01-90, features Paul alone singing and playing, interspersed with scenes of a father and son. It is on ‘The McCartney Years’.
00-02-90 – Promo Video #2

Following the disappointment of the cancelled 1980 tour, the 6 gigs Paul performed in Japan were particularly welcomed. From these shows onwards, ‘Let ‘Em In’ was added, replacing ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ from the earlier gigs.

‘P.S. Love Me Do’, an ill-advised modernised update of ‘Love Me Do’ and ‘P.S. I Love You’, was broadcast in ‘Lennon: A Tribute’, on 05-05-90.
23-06-90 – The SECC Arena, Glasgow (UK)
Mull Of Kintyre (incomplete)

28-06-90 – The King’s Dock, Liverpool (UK)
Medley: Strawberry Fields Forever – Help! – Give Peace A Chance
For Paul’s first Liverpool show in 11 years, he did something very special indeed! Again, this was in the ‘From Rio To Liverpool’ documentary, broadcast in the UK on 17-12-90. Also circulating is around 20 minutes of ‘raw’ footage from this show.

A UK No. 29 hit, this first video features intercut scenes of a birthday party, and was shown on ‘Top Of The Pops’ on 25-10-90, as well as included on ‘The McCartney Years’. ‘Tripping The Live Fantastic’ got to No. 17 in the UK and No. 26 in the USA.
