La De Da [with Paul McCartney]

Ringo’s first new single in 6 years, this actually charted in the UK too, albeit at only No. 63, and it didn’t chart in the USA. The parent album, ‘Vertical Man’, got to No. 85 in the UK and No. 61 in the USA. Taped in S.I.R. Studios, New York on 09-05-98, and in Times Square on 10-05-98, this entertaining video also features brief clips of Paul recording his backing vocals for the song.

Taped on 13-05-98 in The Bottom Line, New York, ‘Photograph’, wasn’t included in the TV broadcast, but was issued on an official DVD release of the show. Most fans would prefer to see Ringo do tours like this, but unfortunately he is more comfortable with the ‘All-Starr Band’ format. His version of ‘Love Me Do’ is on ‘Vertical Man’, though it’s not as artistically successful as the great performance of ‘I Call Your Name’ from 1990.

Following the ‘Vertical Man’ promotion, Ringo formed a 5th All-Starr Band, and toured the USA from 12-02-99 to 29-03-99, this time with: Todd Rundgren (The Nazz/Utopia/The New Cars), Gary Brooker (Procol Harum), Jack Bruce (Cream), Simon Kirke (Free/Bad Company) and Timmy Cappello, with occasional guest Ginger Baker (Cream/Blind Faith). Joe Walsh left before the tour started, but later played on some songs at select shows. Later in the year, Ringo released the Christmas album ‘I Wanna Be Santa Claus’, but it sold poorly, and no promo videos were made for any of the songs.

19-05-00 – ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’ (USA)

With A Little Help From My Friends

This was taped on 18-05-00. From 12-05-00 to 01-07-00, Ringo toured the USA with the 6th All-Starr band, which consisted of: Dave Edmunds (Love Sculpture/Rockpile), Eric Carmen (The Raspberries), Jack Bruce (Cream), Simon Kirke (Free/Bad Company) and Mark Rivera. Billy Squier, Ray Davies (The Kinks) and Billy Preston left before the tour started.

Ringo was probably closer to George than any o
f the other Beatles, and, in typical Ringo fashion, makes light of what was already a surprisingly upbeat event, even saying to the audience at one point ‘Thanks for the jelly babies’! After his own 2 songs, he joins the rest of the band in backing others, including Paul.

  Never Without You

Ringo’s new album, ‘Ringo Rama’, predictably didn’t chart in the UK, and got to No. 113 in the USA. Taken from the album, the video for ‘Never Without You’ features Ringo and his band in an empty theatre, with shots of him sometimes playing the drums while singing this very good song.
