The Burden of Trust Page 33

“Oh, sure you are.”

He pulled me to a lounge chair and sat with me on his lap. Using our joint magic, he surrounded us with swirling colors. Each color carried a different sound, which he’d taken straight from my mind. Cyon’s infectious giggle. The soft sighs he made when he slept. The delighted screeches he let out when he saw me first thing in the morning.

Tears streamed down my face, and Iya dried them, kissing my cheeks. “You see. He’s closer than you think.” He ran his nose along my ear. “And no matter how alone you feel, you aren’t. We’ll always have each other.”

I snuggled my head underneath his chin. “Thanks.” The sounds faded, but the colors continued to pop. “I needed this.”

He ran his hand along my thigh. “No one knows we’re back yet. There’s other ways to distract you.”

I closed my eyes and let his hands wander. Slowly, another ache replaced the ache for my son. Our lips locked, and he pressed me down on the lounge, under the swirling colors. Iya’s attention drove out all thoughts except one: I had love.

  Nikki Frank:

Nikki Frank resides in the lovely Pacific Northwest with her husband and two children. She loves fantasy and repeatedly gets lost in the worlds of such authors as JRR Tolkien, Tamora Pierce, and J K Rowling. On the rare occasion that elusive thing called free time pops up, she’s slowly working her way through Supernatural. In between writing or reading, she enjoys working in her garden and exploring the globe with her family.

Believing you can have both adventure and romance in a single story, Nikki sets out to write stories which leave her readers satisfied. She creates a cast of characters who speak to the good in people and weaves them into a fast-paced adventure that will transport the reader into another world.
