“I don’t know,” she said. “I was pure rage when that happened. I don’t know if it’s a good idea for me to tap into that kind of emotion again.”
“Yeah, better not risk it,” I said. “Ready to go back in?”
“I’ll be there in a minute,” she said.
I left her to her own thoughts. I went back inside to help the others with the cleanup.
Twenty-Five
A few weeks later, we were finally settled into our new home. Kane had finally gotten rid of his apartment for good. All his stuff was now in Gran’s house, or our house now, of course.
We were sitting on the couch, watching TV. The cats were snuggled on either side of us, napping away as cats do.
“This is boring,” Rebecca said when she came in through the wall.
“Isn’t it great?” I said.
It was a cold night out there, and it felt good to be snuggled up next to the man I loved, with cats to boot.
“I’m starting to regret sticking around,” Rebecca said. “I thought we’d be on a new case by now, chasing some ghost or other.”
“I’m sure a case will come up sooner or later. Or maybe even a murder, if we’re lucky.”
Kane gave me a worried look.
“I’m talking to Rebecca,” I reminded him.
“As if that wasn’t obvious.”
“Does Callie have any cases? What about the ghost hunters?” Rebecca asked. “Maybe you could offer to help them out.”
It was clear that Rebecca was bored of the small-town quiet life we were currently living.
The ghost hunters were busy doing their own thing, shooting more episodes. The network that was interested in their show did end up picking them up, just based on the episode they shot while they were in Silver Bells. In a year, it would probably actually air. And then my life might get really interesting. I tried to keep thoughts of fame and fortune away, but they did creep up occasionally. I had to remind myself multiple times that my last brush with fame didn’t really amount to much in the end. Hopefully, this time it would be different.
As for Callie, she knew how to reach me if she needed me. The last time I talked to her, she apologized for not being home when the package I sent her reached her. By that time, the whole thing was over. Rochester Bailey was long gone. I thanked her anyway and reminded her to give Chloe a call because I knew the timid psychic was too shy to do it on her own. She promised she would and that was that.
“I’m sure something will come up eventually,” I said to Rebecca. “Now let’s just enjoy the quiet while we can.”
“I can agree with that,” Kane said as he pulled me in close. Then he kissed me softly on the lips. And then the kiss deepened.
“Eww,” Rebecca said. “I’m out of here.”
“See you later, Rebecca,” I managed to say once I came up for air.
“Yeah, see you later,” Kane added. Then he kissed me again. “Now that she’s gone, the real fun can start. Am I right?”
“Keep dreaming, mister,” I said. “Maybe once this show is finished.”
He took the remote and turned the TV off.
“It looks pretty finished to me,” he said.
We both laughed.
