Dark and Forbidden Luca's Secret Baby Page 11

by Abigail Raines

Jeri brought me my popcorn and I tipped her and invited her over for dinner because I always felt like I had to repay her somehow for being so attentive. I had a feeling it was a specific request from Luca to keep me happy whenever I came to the rink for any reason, game or no. There was also the fact that I needed some more female friends. I was trying to get out more; taking little Jack on walks and engaging with neighbors and people in town. I was a little shy, being from “enemy territory” but I was making some headway. I’d enjoyed a reading group and so far it has been a lot of fun.

I kissed Jack on his fuzzy little head as he watched the game and meditated on the happiness I’d found. It wasn’t always one hundred percent perfect. But life never was. Luca and I knew each other a lot better now which also meant we knew how to drive each other crazy. But he was the kindest man I’d ever met and we took care of each other and made each other laugh. That was all I needed.

“Excuse me.” The woman standing at the end of the aisle and waiting for me to shift so she could get to her seat, also had a little one. But her boy was about four years-old and wearing a tiny hockey jersey, staring at the game with wide eyes. I stood to give the lady some more room and she moved by me, smiling tightly, before taking the seat just two spots from mine.

Her little boy waved at Jack and Jack giggled, hiding his face. “He’s shy,” I said to the little boy. “It’s okay, Jack…”

The woman wasn’t watching any of this. Her eyes were on the game. Though, as I followed her gaze, I noticed that her eyes were on Miguel in particular.

  Interesting.

She probably just had a crush. Every player on The Cougars had a couple of groupies. Gabe was vastly enjoying the attention. Luca seemed embarrassed by it since we’d gotten together.

The woman was staring so intently at Miguel that I had to ask about it. “Do you know Miguel?” I said loudly over the noise.

Her eyes flashed and she looked at me, startled. “No...I um…” She shook her head and hopped to her feet, picking her little boy up in her arms and skirting past me again. “This was a mistake. C’mon, Andy…”

“Hey, wait…” I tried to call her back. But she was already gone.

  That was weird.

By the end of the game though, I’d already forgotten about the restless woman and her kid who had taken off so quickly. Partly because The Cougars won. I jumped to my feet when the buzzer sounded and covered Jack’s little ears against the roar of happy cheers before sitting back down and cuddling him, letting the rest of the crowd leave first before I went to meet Luca outside the locker room.

When the rink was nearly empty, I finally packed little Jack up in his stroller and went out to the corridor now empty of crowds, making my way to the locker room. But Luca was already running down the hall in jeans and a flannel shirt, his arms outstretched.

“My babes!” He bellowed. He threw his arms around me, giving me a wet kiss on the cheek and another softer one on the mouth. He was always particularly giddy after winning a game. Jack squealed when he saw his daddy and Luca chirped hello and got down on one knee to kiss his little head before picking up his arms and spinning him around. I watched my mate and my cub, grinning at each other with adoration in their eyes and it made me choke up a little but I coughed to cover it. You’d never have known Jack wasn’t Luca’s biological son. He was Lucas’ just as much as any blood-born baby would be.

“Let’s go home,” Luca said, throwing an arm around me as he held Jack. He kissed my temple and whispered in my ear, “Let’s go home, my beautiful mate.”
