The Mortal Instruments (as they are now known) are alternately celebrated and scolded for their wild antics onstage. Lovelace (lapsed)
Growing up on a farm, George was no stranger to hard work. The physical labor he engaged in gave him plenty of time to daydream, and he often did, imagining a more adventurous life for himself. He shared some of these daydreams with his grandmother, who claimed to have had encounters with faeries. She encouraged him to write his daydreams down, turn them into stories, but doing so did not satisfy George. He wanted the stories to be real. Being offered the chance to attend the Shadowhunter Academy was quite literally a dream come true.

Tobias Herondale had too gentle of a soul to make a good Shadowhunter. As a child, his parents were deeply concerned about his mild nature, and pushed him to harden himself. Their challenges had the opposite effect; the more they leaned on him to behave as befits a warrior, the more passive he became. This cycle set the stage for his eventual disgrace.
