Prologue
Ana
New Year’s Eve (11:57 P.M.)
I remembered the day I died like it was yesterday. Strange, knowing that was two long years ago. How insane it was to know you had a date with death to reminiscence. Most people remembered birthdays, anniversaries, and even holidays with loved ones. Too bad, I was not most people.
Two years ago, life as I knew it ended.
My life as a human ended.
A new life began…
I stepped on the edge of the roof, my flowing dark hair blowing in the wind. Glancing down, I waited for fear to coil inside me, but I was greeted with nothingness. For the last two years as Marcos’ prisoner, that was the main feeling I had been accustomed to—emptiness.
“Don’t move!” It was a man that shouted. Turning gracefully on my heel yet still remaining on the edge, I glared at the hulking man pointing a gun at me. Then, suddenly, he wasn’t alone. Fifteen of Marcos’ other guards came pouring onto the rooftop.
No Marcos.
Guess the jig was up. They were well aware of my attempt to escape. I took a deep breath, still in an eyelock with the guard who was shouting orders at me. He was commanding me to come back down.
To what, exactly; two more years of being forced to train and fight? To kill? No! There was no way I was turning back now. We worked too hard to get to this moment.
Slowly releasing the breath I didn’t need to take, I stepped backward over the edge. As I began to fall, I sent a wink to the guards.
Catch me if you can, boys.
I plummeted toward the ground, back first. Rounds of gunfire were drowned out by the explosion of fireworks in the sky. The rush of falling was freeing. I felt weightless. The cool air surrounding me was welcomed.
As the ground neared, I maneuvered my body and landed in a ground-splitting crouch in the alley. A homeless man in a party hat stared at me with wide eyes. The mangy cat in his arms screeched and jumped free.
“Hey! You-you scared my cat!” He slurred.
I ignored him and used the super speed of immortality to escape into the city. I zipped in between cars and crowds of drunken people cheering and kissing. I passed them as nothing more than a brush of wind; moving so fast I couldn’t feel my feet touching the ground.
I pushed harder; running and running as the blur of the city lights changed into the greens of the forest.
Freedom…
The word bounced around in my head as I leaped into the trees
Leaves and branches poked my feet as I ran towards the top.
But I didn’t care.
I was free.
A smile spread across my face as tears thre
atened to spill from my eyes.
The fireworks still booming in the sky made me feel as if the world was celebrating my liberation with me. I forced myself not to cry. After everything that had taken place over the last two years, I just wanted to enjoy this moment and not think of the mess that got me here.
The day that forever changed me and the world as I knew it.
The day a vampire killed me.
Chapter 1
Life of Analise
Ana
Two years ago
“Get off your fat ass, Ana! Time for school.” I pulled the covers over my head in an attempt to hide from my evil older sister Kim’s shouting in the hall.
Only she served this amount of bitch in the morning. The worst part was that would be the nicest thing she’ll have said to me all day. Was it something about being skinny and popular that made her mean? Or was she the spawn of Satan? Maybe it was her newly dyed blonde hair. The chemicals must have seeped into her brain and turned her bitch factor to 100%. I snorted to myself at the thought. Nope, Kim hated me on a deeper level, and I didn’t know if I would ever find out why.
Not looking forward to the day but not having any other options, I threw the pink blanket off and dragged myself to the bathroom to get ready. I stopped in front of the full length mirror outside my closet door and stared at the girl in the reflection as she stared back at me.
Why wasn’t she beautiful like her sister? Instead, she had dull dark brown hair that never reached her shoulders sticking out in all directions. She was vertically challenged at only five feet and four inches from the floor. The height didn’t bother me as much as the worst part of this girl in the mirror. The biggest flaw and hardest to hide was the fact that she was fat—not chubby, but fat; weighing in at a scale topping 275 lbs. I growled at that girl staring at me before walking to my dresser, choosing jeans and a baggy hoodie to hide in for the day. I found my big round glasses next to my bed and slipped them on over my blue eyes. It was weird that my eye color was the opposite of the brown eyes all my family members had, but being the only fat ugly one too, I let it go quickly.
Hurrying through the rest of my morning routine, I grabbed my backpack, tossed my toothbrush on the counter, and raced downstairs for breakfast. Dad was already gone per usual, and mom was in the kitchen spiking her coffee. I pretended not to notice and kissed her on the cheek. She smiled and waved me off to the table where there was a plate of bacon and eggs. Mm-hmm, how I loved bacon. How could anyone be a vegetarian with bacon in the world? Oh well, more for me.
Kim entered the kitchen like a diva and took the seat opposite mine. As usual, she glared at me while grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl. I shoved a forkful of eggs and bacon in my mouth and then opened it for her to see.
“Cow.” She shuddered in disgust and left the table.
“Ha, take that, skank!” I mumbled into my plate, but the word cow echoed through my head.
“Mom, take her to school. I can't deal with the embarrassment of even dropping her off a block away.” Kim sniped.
Mom sighed. She sloppily placed her cup down, spilling some of the contents on the counter, and turned to face Kim.
Before she could get a word out, I cut in. “Embarrassed by me? You should be embarrassed that you’re repeating the 10th grade!”
She scoffed.
Turning back to my food, I smiled in satisfaction knowing that I won that round. It was funny that my seventeen-year-old popular and beautiful sister couldn't pass end-of-the-year exams or summer school. Now, we were both starting the sophomore year together, but I was actually sixteen and a real sophomore. Kim slowly walked towards me, her heels clicking on the laminate floor. Once she was close, she slowly leaned down until I felt her breath on my cheek.
“It doesn't matter that I have to repeat a grade because I will always have the satisfaction of being better than you. You’re a fat, ugly, worthless loser.”
To add insult to injury, she pushed my plate off the table. The crash of the porcelain shattering jolted me to my feet. However, it was the water in my eyes that were responsible for the smug look on her face. One day, I would wipe that look right off her face. I only wished that day was today.
“Enough!” My mother finally said something. “Kim, go to school. Ana, I will take you to school today.”
Mom hurriedly left the room as Kim and I continued to stare each other down. The only word to describe the look on her face now was victorious, although I was sure it had nothing to with avoiding giving me a ride to school. She bumped my shoulder roughly as she passed me on her way to the door. Once I heard the front door slam, my resolve broke and the tears flowed. I never understood my sister’s hatred for me. We used to be close when we were little.
That was until he came along.
A soft touch on my back snapped me out of my reverie, and I angrily wiped the tears from my face. I turned to see my mother giving me that pitying look she always did after our fights. Before she could speak, I stomped past her and out the front door. I was in no mood to hear her advice on how to handle my sister. My wish was that she would grow a backbone and put daddy’s little princess in her place just once.
***
We pulled up in front of the school. I wasted no time jumping out of the van, ignoring my mom completely. Until she stood up for not only me but herself, we would both suffer in silence.
Just to add more salt to my already shitty day, I instantly spotted Kim and her loyal league of bimbos standing in front of the main entrance. They laughed and flirted with boys as if they haven't a care in the world. A pang of envy sparked in my chest. I wondered what it felt like to be looked at that way.
Tearing my eyes away, I searched for my only friend, Simon. Next to me, Sy was the biggest loser at school. Simon and I have been best friends for six years. He was new to the school then, and his love for science didn’t exactly make him any friends. This was at the time of my life that Kim started to exclude me from her activities, and I began to eat away my problems away. Simon found me crying in the corner of the library, but instead of asking questions, he just sat beside me, and gave me half of his pb and j sandwich. From that moment, we had been inseparable.
It was barely a few minutes later when he finally pulled up in his beat-up 1990 Cavalier. The rust was covering so much of the car, it hardly looked red anymore. I still couldn't believe that the thing still ran. He got out and met me on the sidewalk, flashing me his metal mouth in a wide smile. I smiled back, and we walked into the school together, ignoring the names I was being called by my sister and her friends. Simon and I got to class early and sat in the back per my daily request. You know those type of nerdy kids that do everything they can to stay invisible? Yeah, that was me and Simon.
“So, I got an early start on our end-of-the-year project,” Simon said.
I gave him a strange look while I took out my history book. “The year just started, Simon. Don't you think you’re jumping the gun a little?
He blushed, shrugged nonchalantly, and pulled out his own book as the last of the students filed in. I peeked through my thick frames just in time to see my sister walk in along with him.
My stomach immediately did the flip-flop at the sight of the one and only guy I ever liked―Jace Thompson. His tall muscular frame was covered in dark jeans and a form-fitting black shirt. It looked perfect on him in a bad boy way. Jace wasn’t a bad boy, though. Contrary to his looks, he was just Jace. His thick dark hair was fanned up away from his strong, model-sculpted face. He laughed at something while walking to his seat, giving me a peek of his dimples. Mm-hmm, how I loved to see those dimples. Just before he sat, his hazel eyes met with mine, freezing the air around us. The undeniable sparks flew between us like the first time we met all those years ago and every time we looked at each other since. The trance was broken when my whore of a sister waltzed up and planted a steaming kiss on his lips while looking at me. She didn't care about him. He was just a toy she used to hurt me. I broke contact, not a
ble to stand looking at them any longer as hurt and jealousy bubbled up in my pit. Luckily, Mrs. Smith came in and began the history lesson. “Ok class, today…”
I tuned her out.
Let sophomore year begin.
Oh, joy!
Note the sarcasm.
Chapter 2
Prank
Ana
The rest of the morning passed in a blur, and before I knew it, it was time for lunch. You would think that being fat, lunch would be my favorite time of the day, but it was far from it. Here at Mercy Heights, the principal thought it was a great idea for everyone to have lunch at the same time. So, for an hour a day, all my enemies were in one place.
Did I want to be there? No thanks. Simon and I usually get our lunch then find somewhere not in the cafeteria to hide out. I paid for my sloppy Joe and waited for Simon beside me to finish paying for his. If he hurried, we could make our escape without bumping into my tormentors. I sighed impatiently, watching him count the exact change when the unthinkable happened. My sister and a few girls walked up to us, smiling. Wait, smiling? That couldn't be right. I looked to Simon who had the same confusion on his face. Deciding quickly not to risk a public fight with her, I looped my arm through Simon’s and attempted to walk away from them.
We were not so lucky.
“Wait, sis. I want you to sit with us today,” Kim said nicely.
Stunned, I froze on the spot. She couldn’t be serious. Me? The school loser, the girl she hated most, the one she spent the last seven years torturing? I raised an eyebrow at her, waiting for the punch line, insult, or joke, but she and her friends just continued smiling at me.
“You-you guys hate me. This has to be a joke.” I finally muttered out.
My sister waved her hand dismissively, taking my hand from Simon’s. “We’re sisters. I could never hate you. Now, come on, let's eat!”
She dragged me to the center table where all the cool kids ate. I glanced back at Simon, begging him silently to come with me. He gave me an uncomfortable look before he slowly trailed us. When we reached the table, Kim dropped my hand to sit on Jace’s lap. I stood awkwardly next to the table. My heart pounded a tattoo on my chest, and I got the feeling that I should run while I still could.
