Gloria continued. “My murder book will be in everyone’s hands, including yours. It’s the only way you’ll ever know my inner thoughts and the details of what I did. You want answers, you have to buy my book.”
Her words sickened me because I knew she was right. Gloria Smythe would finally get the attention she craved. The woman was as clever as a fox.
“I’m out of here, and I hope you have a horrible, boring life while you rot away in a six-by-eight-foot cell.” I headed for the door.
“Detective McCord.”
I turned back and forced myself to look at her. Disgust filled my heart and mind.
“Your copy of Murder by the Book will be the first one I autograph.” Gloria chuckled. “Catchy name, right? In six months, when my true-crime novel is on the New York Times best seller list, you can choke on your words. I’ll never be a nobody again.” She smiled and gave me a wink. “It’ll always eat at you, won’t it?”
I snickered. “Yeah, what will?”
“The fact that I won. Have a nice life, Detective McCord. I know I will, and from this day forward, everyone who has ever picked up a book, or plans to, will know my name.”
