The Cold Page 16

by Rich Hawkins

“Good luck,” he whispered, shaking in the cold, his body falling numb. He’d given his coat to someone else because he wouldn’t need it again.

He trudged towards the towering shape of the God, thinking about his parents, his old friends, and all the people he’d ever known. He spoke the names of the dead. The cold bit at his face. The wind swept snow into his eyes.

He halted no more than one hundred yards from the immense creature as it reared up from the ruin of the bunker and turned towards him. Its huge tendrils filled what remained of the sky. The ground trembled as the God shifted its bulk. Seth gritted his teeth against the flowering pain inside his head, as the God’s presence slithered into his mind. Smaller tendrils grabbed him. This was communion. This was the merging of flesh and minds.

Seth’s final act was one of sacrifice and fulfilment. He was absorbed in seconds. No more pain and no more guilt.

Full of souls and new flesh, the God of the Wasteland sang its terrible song to the cold.
